Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Beach Dogs' pitching staff continued its hot second half start in a 3-2 win over the Daytona Tortugas at Spectrum Field on Friday night. The win pushed the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate to 4-1 in the second half.

For the second night in a row, Clearwater (40-31, 4-1) found themselves playing from behind. After MLB rehabber Scooter Gennett hit a double off Ethan Evanko (4-2), Stuart Fairchild drove the runner home with a single to left. Evanko limited the Daytona (37-33, 2-3) damage in the first after inducing a Jonathan India flyout.

The Beach Dogs responded with a rally against Tortuga starter Jared Solomon (0-2) in the second. With Rodolfo Duran at third and Daniel Brito at second, a wild pitch to Dalton Guthrie on ball four allowed Duran to score from third to tie the score at one.

Evanko allowed just three hits through the next three frames with five strikeouts and gave Clearwater the boost they needed to break the tie.

With two runners on in the fourth against Soloman, Guthrie pushed a ball to second to bring across Brito to give Clearwater a 2-1 advantage. Nick Maton immediately followed with a sharp single off the glove of Mendoza, allowing Danny Mayer to cross the plate for a 3-1 lead.

Maton turned in another impressive night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. The No. 18 prospect for the Phillies (MLB.com) has gone 3-for-5 at the dish in the series against Daytona with five walks.

The lead gave Evanko a cushion he needed, as the lefty allowed a long ball to Fairchild in the sixth which cut the lead to 3-2. The southpaw finished off the frame with a strikeout and two ground-outs to prevent further damage.

The 24-year-old picked up his fourth consecutive quality start on the way to his fourth win of the year. The Gilbert, Ariz. native struck out six while allowing two runs on seven hits. The 6-foot-4 hurler has struck out 25 batters over his last four starts while picking up two wins.

Beach Dogs' bullpen and held off the Tortugas' offense over the final three stanzas. Zach Warren struck out two with no hits allowed in 1.1 innings of work. After issuing a walk in the eighth, Warren exited for Grant Dyer, who induced a 6-4-3 double play to end Daytona's threat. Dyer retired the first two in the ninth before allowing a hit to Mark Kolozsvary. Bruce Yari made a bid to tie the game, but Jhailyn Ortiz laid out in right field to rob the left-handed batter of a hit and end the game.

With three more scoreless innings, Clearwater bullpen pitchers have not surrendered a run in 17.2 consecutive innings. The Philadelphia Phillies' affiliate also improved to 21-20 against teams .500 or better.

Clearwater switches back to the Threshers and goes for the series victory against Daytona on Saturday night at Spectrum Field in game three of the four-game set. It is yet to be determined who will start for the Threshers against Tortugas' RHP Wendolyn Bautista (0-1, 2.33). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with coverage beginning on Threshers Live! The Pregame Show at threshersbaseball.com.
