Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums were defeated by the Washington Wild Things 2-1 in a pitcher's duel at Wuerfel Park on Thursday night.

Jason Kiley started for the Beach Bums against Jason Neitz for Washington and both were brilliant on the hill. Kiley retired 13 in a row from the second inning until a bunt single by Chris Sidick in the sixth. Neitz put up zeroes until the sixth inning and faced the minimum over the final three.

Traverse City opened a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Robby Alcombrack reached on an error and went to second on the play. He was sacrificed to third by Brad Miller and Scott Billak dropped down a squeeze bunt to score Alcombrack and put the Beach Bums ahead.

The lead was short lived as with two outs in the top of the seventh, Washington's Matt Sutton connected on a first pitch homer, clearing the wall in center to tie the game. The Wild Things scored the winning run in the eighth, unearned, off of Kiley. Kris Rochelle doubled with one away and with two outs Chris Sidick reached on an error. Rochelle got away from third and the Beach Bums threw to the plate. When Rochelle made his way back towards third, the throw got away enabling the winning run to cross.

Jason Neitz threw a complete game for Washington to improve to 4-1, allowing just the one unearned run. He struck out four and allowed only two hits. Jason Kiley pitched eight innings for the Beach Bums and was the hard luck loser, falling to 2-4 despite allowing just one earned run to go with a walk and five strikeouts. Neither pitcher threw over 90 pitches in the game.

Jeff Williams threw the ninth inning for the Beach Bums, allowing a single but still facing the minimum. John Alonso and Robby Alcombrack had the hits for the Beach Bums. Traverse City got the leadoff man on in the eighth on an error but a double play quickly erased him.

The Beach Bums will conclude the series with the Wild Things tomorrow night in a 7:05pm game. Traverse City has not announced a starter while Washington will place RHP Andrew Schindling (1-0, 2.84) on the mound for his second start. The contest will feature a birthday party for Suntan and Sunburn with other area mascots. It will also be a FANtastic Fireworks Friday.
