MARION, Ill. - Brad Miller capped a two-run ninth inning with a walkoff RBI single on Thursday as the Southern Illinois Miners rallied to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 3-2.

The Miners rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning against Rockford closer John Muller, who had pitched the RiverHawks out of an eighth-inning jam. With one out in the ninth, Travon Jackson doubled to left field. Tony Roth tied the game with a pinch-hit double to the corner in right. Kevin Koski reached on an infield hit and Justin Randall hit into a force play at second base. Miller worked the count full and drove in Roth with a line drive to left.

Rockford had itself rallied to take a late lead. The RiverHawks tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning when Jason James led off with a double and later scored on a Ross McCoy groundout. With two outs in the eighth inning, Rockford rallied against reliever David Stringer to take the lead. Robert Sabates worked the count full and drew a walk. Todd Martin followed and hit a 3-2 pitch to the wall in center for a RBI double.

Rockford starter Brett Durand struck out six and scattered a run on six hits, but got a no-decision. He left after Jereme Milons' two-out double in the bottom of the eighth. Muller (0-2) got the RiverHawks out of the eighth, but was touched for four hits in the ninth.

Michael Phelps (2-0) retired the last four Rockford batters in order and won in relief.

James was 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 23 games. McCoy was 0-for-4 and his 12-game streak ended. Caleb Fields was 1-for-4 and his streak is at 11 games.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Friday.

The RiverHawks come home for a three-game series against Gateway on June 30. They open the homestand with a Two-For Tuesday. Tickets are two for the price of one, and so are hot dogs.
