Rascals Score Nine Unanswered in Win

River City Rascals News Release


SAUGET, IL - The Rascals trailed 7-2 entering the third inning, but tallied nine unanswered runs in an 11-7 victory over the Grizzlies at GCS Ballpark. River City improved to 6-1 against Gateway, including a 4-0 mark in Sauget, Illinois.

The Rascals (21-10) tied the game at seven in the fourth with four big runs. Jorge Gutierrez singled, Josh Blackstock reached on a Chris McClendon error and Kevin Reynolds singled to load the bases. Chris Colton walked against Collin Brennan to make it 7-4. Scott Robinson ground out to first to plate Blackstock and Chad Maddox singled home two runs to tie the game at seven, bouncing Brennan.

The Grizzlies (11-20) started strong, plating seven runs in the first two frames. Tyler Musselwhite allowed three unearned runs in the first, throwing away a ground ball hit by Charlie Lisk to plate Jareck West. It should have been the third out and Joseph Scaperotta then followed with his tenth home run for a 3-0 lead.

Musselwhite didn't last through the second, allowing an RBI single to Brandon Johnson and a three run home run by Stephen Holdren, his tenth this season. Musselwhite allowed seven runs (four earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings.

River City took a brief 2-0 lead in the first, scoring an unearned run in the frame. Robinson hit a ground ball to second that Brad Thoma flipped to the bag only to see Brandon Johnson miss the ball for an error, scoring Scott Houin from third. Maddox followed with a single to plate Reynolds for a 2-0 advantage.

Robinson blasted his sixth home run in the sixth to give the Rascals a 7-6 lead and Colton launched his seventh in the eighth, a three run shot to put River City up 11-7.

The Rascals bullpen shut down the Grizzlies the rest of the way, combining for 7.2 innings of three hit ball. The relievers struck out ten and walked over without allowing a single run.

Jake Edwards (1-0) picked up the win in his first outing with the Rascals, tossing 3.2 innings allowing one hit with four strikeouts.

Tony Marsala, Josh Lowey and Josh Rose went the final four with Rose making his professional debut. The Lee University product pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

Maddox finished 3-4 with two runs batted in and Colton went 1-3 with a home run, three knocked in and three runs scored. The Rascals wrap up the quick two game series tomorrow at GCS Ballpark. Pablo Lopez (0-0) takes the ball against Joel Boeschen (1-2) for Gateway. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
