Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums were edged 5-3 by the Kalamazoo Kings in front of 4,811 at Wuerfel Park on Tuesday night despite 5.2 scoreless innings from the bullpen.

The Beach Bums grabbed the early 1-0 lead and then rallied late but fell short. In the bottom of the second inning Sam Orr doubled with two away and Zack Kalter singled him home by dropping a hit into right.

Kalamazoo rallied against Steve Shippey in the third with two doubles and five hits to take a 3-1 lead. Kalamazoo plated two more in the fourth to chase Shippey from the game and take a 5-1 advantage. Shippey was hit with the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.

The bullpen held the Kings at bay the rest of the way and allowed the offense a chance to rally. Phil Tognetti pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two hits to go with a strikeout and a walk. Dan Hawkins followed with his best performance of the season, retiring all six Kalamazoo hitters he faced including three by strikeout. Brett Bostelman finished things out, striking out four in two innings. Bostelman allowed a leadoff triple in the ninth but left the runner stranded after a ground out and two strikeouts. The bullpen was chosen as the Players of the Game and the Defensive Players of the Game. In 5.2 innings the bullpen allowed only three hits and a walk while striking out eight amongst the three hurlers.

The Beach Bums began to rally in the seventh inning without recording a hit against Kalamazoo starter Jeff Long. Sam Orr flew out to the fence in right and Zack Kalter and JT Thomas walked to bounce Long, who earned the win after 6.1 innings of four-hit, two-run baseball. Reliever Dan Caldwell struck out Justin Holmes before walking Jeff Brown to load the bases. He then walked Brad Vericker to score Kalter and pull the Beach Bums within 5-2.

In the ninth off of new Kalamazoo closer John Sullivan IV, the Beach Bums put together a two-out rally. Justin Holmes singled to extend his hitting streak to seven in his final at bat of the game. After Holmes swiped second, Jeff Brown looped a single into left center to plate Holmes and draw the Beach Bums within two at 5-3. Brad Vericker drew his fourth walk of the game to put the tying runs on base, but Sullivan recorded a strikeout to close the game. Curtis Ledbetter finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Ledbetter has recorded 12 hits in his past six games.

The Beach Bums will host Kalamazoo at Wuerfel Park again tomorrow in a 7:05 PM contest. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a mini Beach Bums playing cards. Robbie McClellan (1-0, 4.97) starts for the Beach Bums while Scott Fogelson (1-1, 5.00) counters for Kalamazoo. The game can be heard on Fox FM with the Beach Bums On Deck Show beginning at 6:45 PM.
