River City Rascals News Release
Sauget, IL--After a two game sweep at Evansville ended a six game losing streak, the River City Rascals traveled to Gateway to take on a Grizzly team that came into Tuesday night winners of eight straight. The Grizzlies have been almost unstoppable this season as they have started 11-1, which has set a franchise record. The Rascals came in hitting .294 as a team, they have 51 hits in their last four games and were trying to end a four game losing streak to the Grizzlies.
One of the Rascals' stars throughout the first 12 ball games has been Phil Laurent. Laurent was tied for the team high in homeruns at 3 and lead the team with 13 RBIs going into Tuesday night, and he wouldn't waste any time making his presence felt. Laurent homered once again with one out in the second making it 1-0 Rascals.
The lead though would be short lived. Rascals starter Chris Clem got the first four he faced, but then struggled with his control. Clem hit the second batter in the second, walked the third and then gave up back to back doubles for a three run second.
Grizzly first baseman would make it 4-1 in the third with his second homerun on the season.
The Grizzlies would go on to extend that 4-1 lead in the fifth with six runs off five hits and two of those being homeruns.
The Rascals, trailing 10-1, would only put one more rally together. They score three times in the sixth off three hits but stranded runners at first and third with only one out.
It would be the Grizzly bullpen to take over from there, holding the Rascals scoreless through the next three innings.
Clem (0-1) picked up the loss for the Rascals as they dropped to 4-9. Toro Trevino (2-0) started and picked up the win for Gateway which improved to 12-1. Grizzly pitchers combined for 14 strikeout on the night as they came in with a league best 94.
Chris Gibson lead the Grizzly attack on offense going a perfect 4-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Laurent finished the day for the Rascals going 2-3 with a homerun (3), three RBI and a run score.
The two play tomorrow night at GCS Ballpark with the first pitch coming at 7:05 pm. All Rascal games can be heard on the voice of the River City Rascals, 104.5 KSLQ.
