Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, got back in the win column Tuesday at CONSOL Energy Park with a 6-2 win over the Slippery Rock Sliders.
Jarod Rine led the way for the Wild Things at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run (1) that ended up being the deciding factor in the victory.
Southpaw Justin Mattison (1-0) picked up the win and was lights out in three innings of relief for starter Pat Stanley, striking out five and giving up only one hit and no runs.
The Wild Things wasted no time putting pressure on the Sliders when they loaded the bases with only one out in the first inning. Slippery Rock pitcher Alex McEnaney walked Washington catcher Mario Garza to score leftfielder Matt Sutton and put the Wild Things on top 1-0.
The Sliders evened the score in the next inning. Catcher Bernie Dennis singled to center to drive in Jason Curry. Slippery Rock shortstop Jon Hickey followed with a sacrifice fly to score first baseman Jason Von Behren and take the lead 2-1. Stanley was able to end the inning after striking out Cy Donald with the bases loaded.
In the fifth inning, Washington was able to tie the game after Nathan Messner and Mario Garza hit back-to-back singles to put a runner in scoring position. Messner came home on a passed ball after Kyle Padgett struck out swinging to make it 2-2.
Jarod Rine put the Wild Things back in the lead in the seventh with a solo home run (1) over the right field wall. The scoring continued as Garza, Padgett and Justin Gregula each drove in a run, giving Washington a 6-2 advantage.
Slippery Rock tried to rally in the ninth but could not bring home any runners with the bases juiced against reliever Ian Heisel.
The Wild Things take on the Sliders again at CONSOL Energy Park Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the box office at 724-250-9555.
