Baysox Rally From Five Down to Win 8-7

May 10, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Baysox overcame a five-run deficit and a subpart performance by Hayden Penn to beat the Binghamton Mets, 8-7, in a hard-fought victory at NYSEG Stadium on Monday.

With the score tied 7-7 in the top of the ninth inning, Tripper Johnson delivered a two-out single that brought Simon Pond home with the go-ahead run.

For the second straight game, the Baysox offense picked up the slack left by the starting pitching. Penn was hit hard, allowing eight hits in four innings to put the Baysox in an early 5-0 hole. With Eastern League ERA leader Brian Bannister on the mound, Binghamton's lead seemed relatively safe.

But Brandon Marsters sparked Bowie's comeback with a two-run home run in the fifth, part of a 3-for-4 performance that snapped the catcher's 0-for-22 slide.

The Baysox used three more runs in the top of the sixth to even the score and knock Bannister out of the game. Woody Cliffords and Joey Hammond started the inning with back-to-back singles, and a groundout by Jeff Inglin put runners on second and third. Bannister's last pitch of the night resulted in a two-run double off the bat of Pond. He then came home on Johnson's RBI single to bring the Baysox all the way back, 5-5.

Binghamton regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a run off Ryan Keefer, but the Baysox scored twice in the seventh by taking advantage of wildness on the part of Mets pitching. With one out, Cliffords and Hammonds again put together consecutive singles. With Inglin at bat, Mets reliever Jose Rodriguez threw two wild pitches, scoring Cliffords and moving Hammond to third. Inglin would eventually walk.

Tim Hamulack came out of the bullpen to replace Rodriguez, but with Pond at the plate, catcher Mike Jacobs' passed ball allowed Hammond to score and gave Bowie a 7-6 lead.

Binghamton tied the game with a run off Scott Rice in the bottom of the seventh, but Johnson's single off Hamulack (1-2) in the ninth put the Baysox ahead for good.

Chris Ray (1-2) wrapped up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in which he notched four strikeouts.

BAYSOX NOTES: Hammond, Pond, and Marsters all had three hits for the Baysox...Ray's ERA dropped to 0.60 and he extended his scoreless streak to 10.2 innings...Inglin walked twice, increasing his team-leading total to 18.

ON DECK: LHP Brian Forystek (1-0, 1.67) will try to give the Baysox their first three-game winning streak of the season on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., while Binghamton will give the ball to RHP Yusmeiro Petit (0-2, 3.47).
