Otters draft three at FL camp

May 10, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1) News Release

WASHINGTON, PA – The Evansville Otters drafted three players from the Frontier League tryout on Tuesday.

In the first round, the Otters drafted Nick Shay who attended Columbus State University in Georgia. Shay hit .270 for the Cougars in 2005 with three homers and 31 RBIs. He was second on the team with 27 walks helping him to a .395 on-base percentage. Shay played first base and third base at Columbus State. In 2004, Shay started the season in a slump, but rebounded to hit .254 with nine homers and 41 RBI.

"Shay continually showed tremendous ability to hit the ball over the past two days," said Otters manager Greg Jelks.

At Columbus State, Shay played with former Otters' catcher Andrew Ginther. He is also familiar with the coaching staff as he played at Neosho Junior College in 2002 under Otters pitching coach Jeff Pohl.

The Otters selected former Mid-Missouri Maverick Greg Starcher in the second round. In three games last season, Starcher threw 2.2 innings, struck out two and walked two.

For their third round pick, the Otters selected Anthony Del Prete. Del Prete pitched for the North Shore Spirit of the Northeast (currently Can-Am) League. In four games, Del Prete threw four innings, while walking one and striking out one.

According to Pohl,

"Both pitchers have good arms and should compete for rosters spots on our team this season."

The Otters will host the Mid-Missouri Mavericks in an exhibition game on May 21st. General Admission tickets are $3 and all ticket proceeds go to Jacob's Village. For more information, tickets, or to arrange a group outing for that or any other game, contact a member of the Otters sales staff at 435-8686.
