Altoona First Baseman Brad Eldred Named Eastern League Player of the Month For April
The Eastern League announced last week that Altoona Curve first baseman Brad Eldred has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of April. The 6'5", 268 lb. slugger had an outstanding month for the Curve, hitting .316 (24-for-76) with six doubles, 10 home runs, 18 runs scored, 22 RBI, seven walks, one stolen base, a .369 on-base percentage and a .789 slugging percentage in 19 games.
Eldred, who was selected by BaseballAmericaas the eighth best prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization prior to this season, ended the month by hitting a home run in four straight games (April 26th30th) and continued that streak into May, going deep once on May 1st and twice on May 2nd. Eldred's streak of six consecutive games with a home run broke the Altoona franchise record of five straight games with a home run, which was set by former Eastern League MVP Adam Hyzdu during the 1999 season.
Following his two-homer game on May 2nd, the 24-year old received a promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis. During his short stay in Altoona, Eldred certainly left his mark. Since making his Double-A debut on July 21st, 2004, Eldred blasted 30 home runs and drove in 87 runs in just 60 games with the Curve.
This marks the second straight month Eldred has taken home the Eastern League Player of the Month Award, as he also was selected as the winner of the award for the month of August last season after driving in 50 runs in 27 games.
The Coconut Creek, Florida native was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the June 2002 draft after batting .338 with 44 home runs and 142 RBI during a four-year career at Florida International University.
Portland Closer Cla Meredith Promoted to Majors
Just four days after being promoted from Double-A to Triple-A Pawtucket, former Portland Sea Dogs closer Cla Meredith was promoted to the Boston Red Sox.
The 21-year old made his Major League debut in the Red Sox 6-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon. Meredith faced five batters in the game and gave up a grand slam to Richie Sexson.
In 15 innings of work with the Sea Dogs, Meredith struck out 12 batters, converted all nine of his save opportunities and allowed only one runner to advance past second base.
Meredith made one appearance with the Pawsox before the promotion to the Red Sox. He pitched a scoreless inning in his lone appearance with Pawtucket.
Meredith is the 110th player in Sea Dogs history to reach the Major Leagues.
Trenton's Henn Makes A Start For The Yankees.
Trenton Thunder left-hander Sean Henn was promoted from Double-A to the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
The 24-year old made his Major League debut in a start against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday night and gave up five earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Following the game against Tampa Bay Henn was assigned to the Columbus Clippers of the International League. .
Penn Named Baltimore Minor League Pitcher of the Month.
Bowie Baysox right-handed pitcher Hayden Penn was selected as the Baltimore Orioles Minor League Pitcher of the Month for the month of April In five starts during the month of April, Penn had a record of 2-1, struck out 40 batters, held opposing batters to a .202 average and had a 1.55 ERA.

Week Ending May 8, 2005.
Akron Aeros.
E.L. Playerof the Week Jason Cooper hit .440 (11-for-25) last week and currently has an eight-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .429 (12-for-28) with two doubles, two triples, two home runs and five RBI. Over his last six appearances LHP Chris Cooper has not allowed a run, has six strikeouts and has given up just six hits in seven innings of work. The Aeros are 9-1 in one-run games this season and 5-1 in extra-inning games. .
Altoona Curve.
The Curve entered the week leading the league in home runs with 31 in their first 27 games. Among their league-leading total was a string of 10 straight games with at least one homer from April 25 through May 5. OF Ray Sadler became the first Curve player to go directly to the Major Leagues this season when his contract was purchased by Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Binghamton Mets
Friday night at Erie, B-Mets 1B Mike Jacobs turned in one of the best offensive performances in team history, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and six RBI in Binghamton's 10-2 win over the SeaWolves. The B-Mets scored their last six runs in their series with Erie and 14 of their last 25 runs after there were two outs. On the year, Binghamton has scored 71 of its 129 runs with two outs, hitting .333 with men in scoring position and two outs.
Bowie Baysox
OF Woody Cliffords had the most productive day by a Baysox player in almost two years in Sunday's 13-7 win at Reading. The outfielder went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBI, the most runs driven in since Kurt Airoso matched the mark on July 19, 2003. The Baysox had a season-high 18 hits in the contest. .
Erie SeaWolves.
The Erie SeaWolves have won eight of their last 10 games and they currently have a one-game lead over Akron in the Southern Division standings. 3B Don Kelly (.343) and OF David Espinosa (.333) are both currently ranked in the top 10 in batting in the league. .
Harrisburg Senators
Harrisburg finally beat Akron after five tries, on Sunday, May 8th. The Senators had late leads in all three games at Akron, but failed to hold them and lost on Friday and Saturday. However on Sunday, they scored a run in the top of the 10th on a bases loaded suicide squeeze that turned into a bunt single for Brandon Watson when he beat the bunt out.
New Britain Rock Cats
RHP Colby Miller continues to lead the Rock Cats staff and is tied for the league lead in complete games (1), while being tied for second in innings pitched (38.0). LHP Francisco Liriano had nine strikeouts last week and is currently tied for second in the league, with 43 strikeouts this season. The Rock Cats road woes continued over the weekend in New Hampshire where they dropped three games to lower their road record to 3-13 on the year. .
New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
In sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday, May 8 vs. New Britain, the Fisher Cats picked up their 100th and 101st victories in franchise history. In their inaugural season in 2004, the team went 84-57. Their 100th win came in their 169th regular season game. The Fisher Cats currently have a six-game winning streak which includes three shutout victories.
Norwich Navigators
SS Tim Hutting went 8-for-20 (.400) with four doubles, one home run, four runs scored, three RBI, one walk and one stolen base in six games for the âGators last week. After a stretch of making no errors in four games, the âGators have made 14 errors in their last eight games. The Norwich pitching staff has not allowed a home run in their last six games.
Portland Sea Dogs
RHP Cla Meredith became the 110th Sea Dog to appear in the Major Leagues when he made his debut with the Red Sox on Sunday, just three days after being promoted to Triple-A. Hanley Ramirez hit his Minor League Baseball leading sixth triple in the first inning of Sunday's game vs. Norwich. Jim Buckley scored the 7,500th run in Sea Dogs franchise history on Sunday, scoring on a Chris Durbin RBI double.
Reading Phillies
OF Michael Bourn is currently batting .291 and is ranked second in the league in stolen bases (11). 1B Randy Ruiz blasted his sixth home run of the season against Bowie on Sunday and is currently tied with three other players for second in the league in home runs.
Trenton Thunder
2B Gabe Lopez currently leads the league in batting (.372) and on-base percentage (.478) and his teammate OF Kevin Thompson is leading the league in hits (38), doubles (10) and runs scored (25). The Thunder have won six of their last 10 games and have moved to within 3.5 games of first place in the Northern Division.

Eastern League Player of the Week
JASON COOPER, an outfielder for the Akron Aeros, is the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending May 8th. The Moses Lake, Washington native had an excellent week, batting .440 (11-for-25) with one double, two triples, two homers, seven runs scored, four RBI, two walks and a .880 slugging percentage. The 25-year old had a hit in all seven games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, raising his batting average over 60 points during the week and extending his current hitting streak to eight games. For the season Cooper is batting .233 with three doubles, two triples, four home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored. Jason was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the June 2002 draft out of Stanford University.
Eastern League Pitcher of the Week
EDWIN ALMONTE, a right-handed pitcher for the Erie SeaWolves, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 8th. The 29-year old appeared in four games for the SeaWolves last week and had four saves with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. In his first three appearances of the week the 6'3", 220 lb. hurler picked up saves against the Harrisburg Senators at Commerce Bank Park and gave up just one hit and struck out five batters in three innings of work. In his final appearance of the week Almonte struck out a pair of batters and did not allow a runner to reach base while picking up a save against the Binghamton Mets at Jerry Uht Park. Edwin, who currently has a league-high 10 saves on the season, was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a Minor League Free Agent on February 8, 2005.
