Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - Rain delayed the start and caused a brief stoppage of play as the Baysox were able to outlast the SeaWolves, 6-4 Friday night. Starting pitcher Chris Tillman worked just 1.2 innings before the rains came and drove him from the game. Tillman gave up a run on three hits and walked three batters in his shortest appearance of the season. "It's not frustrating I just didn't have it that first inning and I didn't really have the time to make the adjustments. Just one of those nights, I couldn't make the adjustments."
The SeaWolves opened the scoring in the top of the first when Wilkin Ramirez hit a one-out single up the middle. Ramirez moved to second on a groundout by Jeff Frazier and Ryan Roberson brought him in with a double to right field, giving Erie a 1-0 lead.
Bowie answered in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Finan got things started with a solo homerun to lead off the inning. Jonathan Tucker drew a walk and Sebastien Boucher drove a double into the gap in right-center, scoring Tucker from first. Blake Davis followed with an RBI double of his own, smacking one to left field that brought Boucher home. Mike Rodriguez advanced Davis to third with a sacrifice bunt and Davis came in to score on a passed ball by Dusty Ryan, giving the Baysox a 4-1 lead.
Erie stormed back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Kody Kirkland led off with a solo homerun to left field. Casper Wells drew a walk and Shawn Roof hit a single into right field, advancing Wells to third. Will Rhymes got a base hit up the middle to bring Wells in to score, cutting the Bowie lead to 4-3. Wilkin Ramirez drew a walk to load the bases and Jeff Frazier hit a hard ground ball to third base. Jonathan Tucker was able to step on third, but his throw to first was late and Roof came in to score and tie the game at 4-4.
Reliever Kam Mickolio came on to throw 2.0 innings of one-hit baseball, allowing three walks and striking out two. Mickolio looked much better on the mound after struggling lately, "Felt pretty good tonight. I haven't been all there the past few outings, but I took my time tonight. I felt in control, you know, I felt good. I've got to work on keeping my head back and I did that tonight."
The tie lasted until the bottom of the eighth when the Baysox broke it open. Jonathan Tucker and Sebastien Boucher each drew one-out walks and, with Blake Davis at the plate, Angel Castro threw a wild pitch and both runners advanced. Davis hit a ground ball to Will Rhymes at second base and Rhymes tried to come home to cut off Tucker. The throw was wild and Tucker scored easily. Boucher came flying around third base and scored when home plate was left uncovered. Blake Davis made a heads-up play on the basepaths and came all the way around to third base. Danny Zell came in to end the threat but the damage was done as the Baysox took a 6-4 lead.
Blake Davis went 2-for-4 on the night with two doubles and the fielder's choice that became the turning point of the game. "Well, it was a 3-1 pitch and I was just looking for something to drive. I actually broke my bat on it but we were fortunate and we ran the bases and it paid off. The runner on third made a good play, made him force a throw he shouldn't have made."
Julio Manon came on and retired all three batters he faced to earn his 20th save of the year. With the victory, the Baysox improve to 49-38 on the year, still second place in the Southern Division. Bowie hosts the SeaWolves again Saturday night as RHP Jason Berken (6-3, 4.15 ERA) will face off with Erie RHP Ben Fritz (2-4, 5.93 ERA).
Saturday is Louie's birthday at Prince George's Stadium and Sunday is Renew Your Vows Night.
