(Manchester, NH)- Thunder starting pitcher Phil Coke went 7 shutout IP to lead Trenton past New Hampshire 6-0 on Friday night from Merchantsauto.com Stadium in Manchester, NH. Trenton pitching has now tossed 22 straight scoreless innings, and notched back-to-back shutouts.
Trenton (52-34) took a 1-0 lead in the 5th inning. With two runners on and one out in the frame, SS Ramiro Pena delivered an RBI single off of New Hampshire starting pitcher Robert Ray (3-2) to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Trenton batted around in the 6th inning to take a 5-0 lead. After 3B Chris Malec was hit by a pitch and LF James Cooper walked, RF Edwar Gonzalez belted an RBI double to make it 2-0. After the double, 1B Cody Ehlers was intentionally walked to load the bases for C Joe Muich. Muich singled to centerfield to bring home another run and increase the lead to 3-0. A sacrifice fly RBI by 2B Reegie Corona and an RBI groundout by Ramiro Pena capped off the scoring in the frame. Gonzalez added to the lead in the 6th inning with a solo home run. Gonzalez went 2 x 4 with 2 R and 2 RBI. Corona went 3 x 3 with a 2B and an RBI in the win. He has now hit in 13 of his last 15 games.
Coke (7-3) allowed only four baserunners to reach in his 7 innings of work. He scattered two hits and walked two while striking out 6. Coke won his third straight start and has only allowed 2 ER in his last three starts (20 IP). Thunder reliever Anthony Claggett pitched two scoreless innings to wrap up the win. Claggett has not allowed a run in 11 of his last 12 appearances. Ray (3-2) gave up 8 H and 5 ER in 5 + innings to take the loss for New Hampshire.
Trenton and New Hampshire will play the second game of a four-game series on Saturday night in New Hampshire. RHP Eric Hacker (3-1) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire LHP Brett Cecil (3-1, 2.91). Game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
