Rapid City Rush News Release
(Hidalgo, TX) - The Rapid City Rush kicked off a four-game road trip to south Texas with a thrilling 3-2 shootout win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Tuesday night. After both sides skated to a tie after 65 minutes, a twelve-round shootout decided it as the Rush received ten straight saves by goaltender Danny Battochio before Shawn Limpright sent home the game-winner. Up next, the Rush take on the Laredo Bucks tomorrow at 6pm MST and the game can be heard live on 100.3fm the FOX.
The Rush got on the board early with the eighth goal of the season from Les Reaney who snapped a low shot from the right half wall, beating Killer Bees goaltender John Murray just 1:23 into the first. The Rush doubled the lead at the 14:37 mark, converting on their first powerplay chance of the game against the top-ranked penalty kill unit in the league. Jesse Schultz and Konrad Reeder set up defenseman Riley Weselowski at the right point for a slap shot that found its way in through a screen, doubling the Rush lead. The two-goal advantage lasted less than two minutes due to defenseman AJ Mikkelsen scoring his first of the season from the bottom of the right circle, pulling the Bees to within one.
The Rush seemed poised to maintain the lead, but a screened shot from defenseman Scott Balan with just over nine minutes left in regulation forced overtime and the eventual shootout.
The Rush began the shootout against the ropes, trailing 2-0 through the top-half of the second round. However, Shawn Limpright found the twine in the second round, and defenseman Carl Hudson kept Rapid City alive with a conversion in the bottom half of the fifth round. After allowing the first two attempts, Danny Battochio turned aside ten straight Killer Bees shooters, setting the state for Limpright. In the bottom of the twelfth round, Limpright snapped a wrist shot inside the left post for his second conversion of the shootout and lifting the Rush to a 3-2 win.
The twelve rounds mark the longest shootout in franchise history and gives the Rush three straight victories.
