Mallards Tame Sundogs in O.T. 4-1
December 13, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
Prescott Valley, Ariz. (December 13, 2011) - Eric Giosa scored his second goal of the game at 44 seconds of overtime to give the Quad City Mallards a 4-3 win over the host Arizona Sundogs Tuesday night. The victory extended the Mallards' regulation unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) and propelled Quad City into a tie for third place in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference.
Giosa ended the game and capped off a three-point evening- he also picked up an assist- with a blast from the top of the left wing circle.
Sudden death proved necessary after a third period that saw the Mallards surge back from 2-1 down to take the lead only for the Sundogs to rebound and re-tie the contest. Quad City evened the score at two when Jared Lavender- who would go on to assist on the game winner- buried Giosa's drop pass from the slot. At 6:56, Giosa pounced on a rebound and shoveled home a power play tie-breaker. The Sundogs, who would earn one point for the overtime defeat, recovered to knot the score at three thanks to Kevin Petovello's tip-in at the 11:18 mark.
The Sundogs had spent much of the contest on top- though it was the Mallards who used an early power play to grab the game's first goal. Shane Lovdahl's one timer from the right wing circle gave Quad City a 1-0 lead at 4:24 of the first period.
The Sundogs soon bounced back to grab the lead themselves by scoring twice in 39 seconds. David Nimmo's wraparound tied the score at one at 5:56; at 6:35, Jeff Martens snapped the deadlock with a drive that broke in off Mallard goaltender David McKee (37 saves).
Forward Tyler Sheldrake returned to the Mallards' roster from injured reserve Tuesday and skated Tuesday evening against the Sundogs, while forward Mickey Lang (illness) was placed on 10-day injured reserve retroactive to last Saturday.
The Mallards, who will meet the Sundogs again tomorrow night, next play on home ice Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Missouri Mavericks.
