Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (10-8-4) fell behind early against the Rapid City Rush (11-9-1) but were able to rally in the third period and escape with a point in a 3-2 shootout loss Tuesday night at State Farm Arena.
The Bees were outshot in all but one period, forcing goaltender John Murray to make 26 saves. The shootout was the Bees fourth in the last six games.
The Rush opened the scoring at 18:37 into the first period when Jesse Schultz carried the puck behind the net, after avoiding a check he sent it up the boards to a waiting Les Reaney who fired it past an unaware Murray.
Rapid City struck again 5:23 into the first when Riley Weselowski took another feed from below the goal line and fired a slapshot from the point to make it 2-0.
With about three minutes left in the first AJ Mikkelsen took matters into his own hands when he took the puck on an end-to-end rush, after squirming past a Tyler Miller check along the boards Mikkelsen took a shot that beat Danny Battochio on the short side.
The Bees were on their heels in the third period and being outshot heavily when Scott Balan Balan made one count. With Battochio heavily screened Scott Balan ripped a shot from the point that tickled the twine.
After a scoreless overtime period the game went to a marathon shootout that remained tied until Shawn Limpright scored in the 12th round to send the Bees home with the loss.
The Bees will hit the road for Wichita where they will face off with the Thunder Friday night.
