Louisville Bats News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Louisville Bats (40-55) extended their winning streak to five games and clinched the series four-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs (40-58) after picking up a 9-4 win on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The five-game streak matches a season-best mark for consecutive victories for the Bats.
Right-handed starter Jose Lopez (4-8, 4.72) earned the victory for Louisville after tossing five and two-thirds innings and allowing just four hits while striking out a season-best 10 batters on 106 pitches, 68 strikes. Lopez did concede all four Syracuse runs but only three were earned runs. Chiefs starting pitcher Brady Dragmire (1-5, 7.75) took the loss after allowing 10 hits to plate seven Bats' runs in five innings.
The Louisville offense got going early as it managed to score five runs and send nine batters to the plate in the second inning. Steve Selsky opened the scoring with an RBI double that scored D.J. Peterson before Chadwick Tromp stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch of his at-bat flying into the night sky for a three-run home run. The big inning was capped off on an RBI triple by Mason Williams that brought home C.J. McElroy to give the Bats a 5-0 advantage.
The three-run blast by Tromp was his second home run of the season. The catcher finished 1-for-4 in the game a batted in three runs on the homer.
Syracuse cut into the Louisville lead with one run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third, but the Louisville offense again plated multiple runs in fifth on RBI singles by Peterson and Josh VanMeter to extend the lead to 7-3.
A Chiefs run in the sixth shrunk the Bats' lead to three runs. That margin held until the ninth when Gabriel Guerrero's two-RBI triple put Louisville safely in the driver's seat as all-star closer Kevin Quackenbush (0-1, 2.37) came in a closed-out Syracuse in the home half.
The Bats racked up 12 hits in the game with Guerrero, Peterson, and VanMeter all having multi-hit nights. Guerrero finished with two RBIs and a triple while Peterson and VanMeter collected one RBI apiece.
Louisville newcomer Brian O'Grady recorded his first Triple-A hit in Bats' uniform. O'Grady made the most of his pinch-hitting at-bat in the ninth and sent a 1-1 pitch down the right-field line for a double.
The Bats will try for the series sweep and look to extend their winning streak to six games on Sunday in the finale at Syracuse. Louisville right-handed pitcher Keury Mella (1-1, 5.00) will start opposite the Chief's Phillips Valdez (3-6, 3.21). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
