From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians clawed back from a 5-2 deficit with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, but the Knights walked off on a Dustin Garneau sac fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to take the series opener. Clay Holmes gave up five runs on 10 hits in seven innings pitched before Damien Magnifico helped get the Indians to extras with two shutout innings in relief. Adam Frazier led the Indians' 11-hit attack with three hits in five at-bats. Jose Osuna, Kevin Kramer and Kevin Newman all recorded their 24th doubles of the season in the loss. Eloy Jimenez homered twice off Holmes and added a run-scoring double for good measure in the Knights' seventh walk-off win of the season.
ROAD STUD: Kevin Kramer leads the team with 30 multi-hit games, 19 of which have occurred on the road. On the current road trip in five games, he's 11-for-18 (.611) with two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Kramer has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 road starts, batting .477 (21-for-44) with five doubles, one triple and five RBI in those games combined. For the season, his home/road splits are drastic; his triple-slash line in 45 road games is .345/.407/.565 compared to .242/.293/.404 in 44 games at Victory Field.
WALKED OFF: The Indians' loss last night was their fourth in walk-off fashion this season and second of the road trip. Indy was walked off just twice in its first 24 road losses but has watched its opponent celebrate a walk-off in two of the last three days. The Tribe have dug out of 3-0, 7-0, 2-0 and 5-2 deficits in each of their walk-off defeats.
DRIVING IN RUNS: Adam Frazier tallied six RBI in the four-game set at Gwinnett and had another RBI in last night's loss, giving him a career-high five consecutive games with at least one RBI. He is the third player with a RBI streak of five-plus games this season; Christopher Bostick had a five-game RBI streak from May 17-21 and Jordan Luplow had a six-game RBI stretch from June 25-30. Frazier has seven RBI on the current road trip after having 10 RBI through his first 24 games this season with Indy.
BOSTICK BACK IN ACTION: Tribe outfielder Christopher Bostick returned from the 7-day DL today after undergoing an appendectomy the night of June 26. He was placed on the DL on June 27 and missed 21 games, with Indy going 9-12 in his absence. Bostick, Indy's 2017 Team MVP, rehabbed for three games in the GCL and hit .375 (3-for-8) with one double, two RBI, three runs scored and three walks.
ANDERSON ACTIVE: Right-handed reliever Tanner Anderson was optioned by Pittsburgh yesterday to make room for INF/OF Sean Rodriguez on the big-league roster in Pittsburgh. Anderson was activated today and INF Alfredo Reyes was transferred to Double-A Altoona to create space. Anderson, 25, picked up his first MLB victory in the Pirates' final first-half game against Milwaukee, a walk-off win in 10 innings at PNC Park. He's 1-2 with a 2.17 ERA, three saves and 10 holds in 27 appearances for the Tribe.
HOMERS OFF HOLMES: Last night's Tribe starter Clay Holmes struck out eight batters for a fourth time since the beginning of June, but he allowed five runs on 10 hits, two of them being solo home runs by Eloy Jimenez. The long balls came in the first and fifth inning; Holmes had surrendered just five total homers in 179.0 career innings with the Tribe entering last night's outing.
SECOND IN THE WILD CARD: The Indians enter tonight's game against Charlotte one game back of Scranton/W-B in the IL Wild Card race and 1.5 games back of Toledo for first place in the IL West. Indy has 44 games remaining this regular season, 23 of those coming against teams above .500.
IL SOUTH STRUGGLES: The Indians are 13-18 against the IL South this season with two games remaining tonight and tomorrow vs. Charlotte. Indy went 5-1 vs. Norfolk but owns an 8-17 mark against Durham, Gwinnett and Charlotte combined. Indy had never lost the season series to the IL South as an affiliate of the Pirates prior to this season. Indy has finished below .500 against the IL South now six times since 1998. They went 22-26 in each of 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2004. The '98 and '99 campaigns were Reds-affiliated seasons while the '01, '03 and '04 seasons were Brewers-affiliated campaigns.
INDY VS. CHARLOTTE: The Indians have lost five of their eight matchups with the Knights this season. From 2015-17, Indy went a combined 17-6 against Charlotte. Since 1998, the Indians have lost the season series to Charlotte just seven times, most recently going 3-5 each year from 2012-14.
