Barrows' Drive Defeats the RailCats in Extras

Sioux City, Iowa - Peter Barrows' two-run home run in the bottom of the twelfth inning gave Sioux City a 5-3 victory over the RailCats. With the loss, Gary SouthShore is now 27-18. The Explorers improved to 20-25 with the victory.

James Adkins retired the first two batters of the inning before allowing a single to Leugim Barroso. Peter Barrows then lifted a high-fly ball that just barely stayed fair down the left-field line to give the Explorers a walk-off win.

Sioux City scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. With one out, Anthony Kaskkaden doubled to left and scored on Leugim Barroso's base hit through the left-side to take a 1-0 lead.

The RailCats offense was quiet through the first five innings, earning just three hits against Jason Jarvis. Jarvis entered the game fifth in the league in ERA with a 2.64 mark.

In the top of the sixth inning, RailCats hitting coach Aaron McEachran was thrown out for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Brian Kreps during Zac Mitchell's at-bat to lead-off the inning.

Following Mitchell's fly out to center, the RailCats offense woke up with a base hit by Chase Tucker and a walk by Adam Klein. Then Mike Massaro pounded his eighth triple of the season; into the alley in right-center scoring both Tucker and Klein to take the lead 2-1.

Working against RailCats reliever Boomer Potts, the Explorers took the lead right back in the seventh. Bryan Pounds led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt. Sam Judah was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a fly-out, Anthony Kaskkaden hit a little flair over the head of the first baseman Christian Vitters.

The ball dropped and Vitters' throw home went wild allowing both runners to score to give Sioux City a 3-2 lead.

In the eighth inning the RailCats tied the game thanks to a throwing error by reliever Chris Bobishbaugh. With runners on the corners and one out, the Explorers pulled starter Jason Jarvis. Klein was then caught stealing second with Mike Massaro at the plate. Massaro dragged a bunt back to the pitcher Bodishbaugh, however, his throw to first was low and got away from Luke Murton allowing Zac Mitchell to score from third.

The RailCats then loaded the bases in the inning, but Bodishbaugh got out of it with a strikeout of Christian Vitters.

Ian Durham fired two shutout innings of relief covering the eighth and ninth innings for the RailCats. He struck out two and allowed one man to reach on an error by shortstop Zac Mitchell.

The RailCats threatened in the twelfth inning with a runner on second and two out. Sioux City intentionally walked Mike Massaro to face Cristian Guerrero. Guerrero lifted an easy fly into right-center to end the threat.

It was the RailCats last chance before Barrows' drive won the game.

Both starters did not receive a decision in the game despite turning in quality starts. Will Krout went six innings, allowed one runs on six hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Jason Jarvis went 7 and â..." innings allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out one.

The RailCats are now 4-2 in extra inning games this season, Sioux City improved to 2-1 win the win.

The RailCats and Explorers complete their four-game series on Friday. LHP Ari Ronick (4-3, 4.47 ERA) will start for the RailCats and Sioux City will counter with LHP Richard Salazar (3-1, 4.30 ERA). The radio broadcast will begin at 7:00 on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore.
