HOOVER -- Michael Coleman singled in Johnny Raburn in the first inning of the Montgomery Biscuits' game against the Birmingham Barons at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium Monday night, but Montgomery's first run was also its last. The Barons took the lead in the bottom of that inning and held it until the end, winning 4-1 to grab a two-games-to-one series lead.

Corey Smith was on the tail end of back-to-back-to-back two out hits by the Barons in the bottom of the first, doubling in two runs to hand Birmingham starter Lance Broadway the lead. Broadway allowed seven hits in his seven innings but didn't walk a single Biscuit while striking out seven. Relievers Arnie Munoz and Ehren Wasserman preserved his victory.

Montgomery strter Jason Cromer permitted only one more run in his five-inning start; a fifth-inning single by Pedro Lopez scored Chris Amador. Cromer suffered his third loss of the season.

The Barons threatened to heap on insurance runs in the eighth inning against Montgomery reliever Marcos Carvajal, loading the bases on three straight hits to begin the inning. But their only run in the frame scored when Thomas Collaro was hit by a pitch.

The loss placed the Biscuits three games behind division-leading Jacksonville in the second half. Montgomery remains eight games above Birmingham for the second-best overall record, which could result in a playoff spot if Jacksonville wins the half.

The Biscuits try to even the series at two games apiece Tuesday night at 7:05 with left-hander Mike Prochaska on the mound.
