Braves offense relentless in win

The Braves set new marks for hits in an inning, hits in a game, and runs in a game as they downed the Carolina Mudcats 13-4 in front of 2,919 fans at Trustmark Park Monday night.

Mississippi took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Luis Hernandez singled and moved to third on an error by second baseman Kevin Randel. Brandon Jones then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought Hernandez to the plate with the games first run.

Carolina answered with three runs in the third. JC Muniz and Manu Olivera got back-to-back one-out singles. Randel then tripled to right field bringing both runners to the plate. Randel came in to score on a single by Lee Mitchell to give the Mudcats a 3-1 advantage.

The Braves set a new season high for hits in an inning in the fourth. Jarrod Saltalamacchia led off with a single, Josh Burrus hit a double, Anthony Lerew singled, Luis Hernandez doubled, Yunel Escobar singled, and Brandon Jones singled. Barbaro Canizares, Burrus, Onil Joseph, Mike Rozema, and Hernandez each came in to score. Mississippi sent 10 batters to the plate and took a 6-3 lead.

The Braves added a run in the fifth after Canizares led off the inning with a single. He came in to score on a single by Rozema to give the Braves a 7-3 lead.

Mississippi didn't let up in the sixth. Escobar walked, Jones singled, and Saltalamacchia walked to load the bases for Canizares. Canizares tripled to right-center clearing the bases and giving the Braves a 10-3 advantage. Canizares injured himself sliding into third and left the game.

The Braves plated three more runs in the the seventh. Hernandez walked, Satlalamacchia singled, and Michael Rosamond reached on an error. Hernandez and Saltalamacchia scored on the error to make the score 12-3. Josh Burrus then doubled Rosamond in to give the Braves a 13-3 lead.

Carolina got a solo homer from Brett Carroll in the eighth to make the score 13-4.

Anthony Lerew (5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 K) gave up three runs on six hits through the first five innings while fanning five batters. He improved to 4-2 on the year. Eric Schmitt (3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 HR) only gave up a solo homer in the eighth. Glenn Tucker (1.0 IP, 1 K) threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Mudcats' starter Manu Olivera (4.2 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) gave up seven runs on 13 hits through the first four and two-thirds innings. He fell to 3-7 on the season. Chris Mobley (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) left the game in the sixth with an injury. Kevin Cave (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) gave up a run in an inning of work. Scott Nestor (1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) gave up three unearned runs in one inning of work. Rex Rundgren (1.0 IP, 1 BB) threw one scoreless inning.

The Braves continue a five game set at Trustmark Park as they take on the Carolina Mudcats, the AA Affiliate of the Florida Marlins, in game four of this series. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). The Braves are scheduled to send righty Kyle Davies to the hill for a major league rehab assignment. The Mudcats are scheduled to counter with LHP Adam Bostick.
