Barons Hot Streak Continues with 10-5 Win over Smokies

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons picked up their third consecutive victory over the Tennessee Smokies, earning a series victory with a 10-5 win in front of 3,033 fans at Smokies Park.

The offense scored early and often against Smokies starter Dae-Eun Rhee (2-3, 3.90), taking a 7-0 lead in the sixth inning. Trayce Thompon's ground-rule double and Chris Curley's RBI single in the third started the scoring and gave the Barons a 2-0 lead.

Jamie Pedroza tallied three RBI over the next three innings, ripping a fourth inning RBI single as part of another two-run inning to take a 4-0 lead. He struck again in the sixth inning with a two-run single. Pedroza finished with a team-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Josh Richmond also plated a run with an RBI double in the inning in his first game off the disabled list, giving him a team-high 27 on the season as the Barons took a 7-0 lead.

Barons' starter Bryan Blough allowed three hits over 4.0 scoreless innings in his second Double-A start.

Kevan Smith, who hit .358 in the month of May, continues to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his fourth long ball of the season, which gave the Barons an 8-2 lead in the 8th.

The Barons scored two additional runs in the ninth inning including one on an RBI single by Rangel Ravelo. The runs proved to be important as the Smokies scored three runs in the ninth but Ryan Kussmaul prevented the game from becoming too interesting, retiring Kris Bryant and Charles Cutler with two runners in scoring position to end the contest.

Reliever Kevin Vance (4-1, 4.00) picked up his team-leading fourth win of the year, striking out two over 2.0 scoreless innings as the Barons improved to 26-32 on the year with their sixth victory in the last seven games. The loss was theeight in a row for the Smokies who fell to 26-31.

The Barons will look win their fourth-straight game Tuesday night as LHP Scott Snodgress (3-3, 4.47) takes the hill against RHP Joe Gardner (0-0, 0.77). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 PM CDT.
