Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 2, 2014) - The Generals (24-33) earned their second win in a row over the Huntsville Stars (39-19) 9-4 in a soggy, rain-shortened game Monday in Jackson. Jackson's first eight batters reached base safely and the first six scored against starter Brent Suter (6-4, 3.25). Despite the loss, Huntsville clinched the Southern League North title due to Tennessee's loss to Birmingham tonight.
The game was called after a 30 minute delay prior to the bottom of the eighth inning.
Ketel Marte (2x5, R) extended his current hit streak to nine games with his 18th multi-hit game. Manny Pina (3x4, 2 R, RBI, 2B, 3B) earned his first three-hit game as a General and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Jack Marder (2x3, 3B, RBI) joined his two teammates as he earned his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
Jackson brought the bats to the ballpark Tuesday as the first eight batters in the order reached in the first inning. With two runs already in Dario Pizzano (1x2, 2 R, 5 RBI, BB, GS) hit his first Double-A home run. To add to the excitement, it was a grand slam that pushed the early Generals lead to 6-0. The slam was the fourth already this season by the Generals.
The Stars cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth. Shea Vucinich hit his second double of the season to score Kentrail Davis. Greg Hopkins advanced to third on the hit and scored on a wild pitch. Vucinich scored a sacrifice fly by Nick Shaw and the Jackson lead was cut to 6-3.
Manny Pina (3x4, 2 R, RBI, 2B, 3B) hammered his second Generals home run over the 24-foot wall in left field in the bottom of the fifth. Then Pizzano, who reached on catcher's interference, came around to score on Jack Marder's (2x3, RBI, BB, 3B) second triple of the year. The two runs increased the Jackson lead to 8-3.
The Generals added one more run one inning later as Pizzano drew a bases loaded walk. The base on balls scored Jamal Austin (1x4, 2 R) and Jackson led 9-3 after six innings.
Vucinich reached on an error by Patrick Kivlehan (0x2, R, BB) to lead off the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles by Josh Prince and Nick Ramirez moved Vucinich around to score and Jackson's lead was cut to 9-4.
Rain came for the second consecutive night, ending the game in the eighth inning. A drizzle developed into a steady rain in the fifth inning and it became too much to continue during the eighth as the Generals picked up their second straight victory over the Southern League's best team.
Forrest Snow (0-0, 5.79) pitched well in his return to the Generals. He could not finish the fifth inning, but gave up only three runs on three hits in 4.2 innings. Nick Hill (1-1, 5.06) picked up Snow out of the bullpen. He gave up one run on three hits in 2.1 innings and earned his first Jackson win of the season. Stephen Kohlscheen (1-1, 1.29) pitched a scoreless eighth to preserve the 9-4 Generals victory.
Suter dropped to 6-4 with the loss. He recovered nicely, but the 6-run first inning was too much for the Stars to overcome.
The Generals and Stars will play the fourth of this five-game series on Tuesday. Victory Sanchez (1-2, 5.40) will look to even his record on the mound for Jackson as Huntsville will send Jed Bradley (0-0, 0.00) to the hill for his Double-A debut. The game will be at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
