Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Daniel Barone made the most of his Triple-A debut, scattering a run on three hits over eight innings to pilot the Albuquerque Isotopes (35-34) to a 9-2 victory over the Round Rock Express (30-39) before the third-largest crowd in Isotopes Park history Saturday night.
Barone (1-0), transferred from Double-A Carolina prior to the game, was outstanding in his first outing at the Triple-A level. The 24-year-old righty took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, before Josh Anderson broke up the bid with a single up the middle with one out in the frame. Over eight innings pitched, Barone surrendered just one run-a seventh-inning home run off the bat of Jason Lane. That round tripper was one of just three hits Barone would allow. He walked two and struck out two. Barone threw 89 pitches, 60 of which were strikes.
The Isotopes gave the young pitcher plenty of offense. For the second-straight night, it was a five-run first inning that put Albuquerque in the driver's seat for the duration of the game. In its first at-bat, Albuquerque sent nine men to the plate, collecting four hits. Todd Linden hit an RBI single, Andrew Beattie followed with a two-run single, and John Baker finished things off with a two-run double for a 5-0 advantage.
The offense didn't stop there for the âTopes, though. Continuing to strike with the big inning, Albuquerque pushed across four in the fifth inning for an added cushion on already comfortable lead. After Scott Seabol drew a lead-off walk, Beattie followed with a home run to left-a two-run shot that ran the Albuquerque lead to 7-0. After that, Round Rock turned into its own worst enemy. With one on, Eric Reed drew a walk and Chad Hermansen loaded the bases with a hit by pitch. Valentino Pascucci was hit by another pitch to force in the sixth run, and Linden drew a bases loaded walk to push across one more, giving Albuquerque a 9-0 lead through five full innings.
The Express finally cracked Barone in the seventh, but just briefly. Lane smacked a 1-2 Barone offering over the wall in left to put Round Rock on the board for the first time. In the ninth, now with relief pitcher Chris Young on the hill, the Express scored once more. Danny Klassen hit a lead-off triple to right-center field, and one batter later he'd come around to score on a Brooks Conrad groundout. That would be, however, as close as the Express would get.
Beattie led the âTopes offensively, finishing with three hits and four driven in. Albuquerque banged out 12 hits on the night.
The loss went to Chan Ho Park (4-5), who allowed five runs on seven hits through just three innings of work. Park walked three and punched out four. Miguel Asencio lasted two innings out of the bullpen and allowed all four runs in the fourth. Juan Rodriguez and Travis Driskill held Albuquerque silent over the final three frames.
Attendance for Saturday night's game was 14,547, the third-largest in Isotopes Park history. The largest crowd in ballpark history came on July 3, 2006-a mark of 15,020.
The Isotopes and Express hit the third leg of the four-game set on Sunday at Isotopes Park. In a matchup pitting a pair of southpaws, Chris George (4-5, 4.63) takes the hill for Albuquerque, while the Express send Philip Barzilla (6-4, 4.97) to the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
Sunday, the first 3,000 fans receive an Isotopes T-shirt, courtesy Rocky Mountain RV & Marine. Also, there will be another Albuquerque Journal Autograph Session on the concourse, beginning at 5 PM. Isotopes pitchers Chris Young and Ben Julianel will be on-hand.
