Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Jeff Mathis stroked a two-run homer as part of a five-run first inning, and the Salt Lake Bees got three home runs and held off the Portland Beavers for an 8-5 victory at PGE Park Saturday night.
Adam Pavkovich later hit a solo homer and Ryan Budde added a two-run shot for the Bees, who hold a 5 ½ game lead over Portland in the North Division.
Jonathon Rouwenhorst (6-2) worked five innings for the win. The left-hander yielded three runs (2 earned), eight hits, four walks and struck out one.
Portland starter Mike Thompson was charged with five first-inning runs (4 earned) but faced just two batters over the minimum over his next six innings in the loss. Thompson (1-6) gave up six hits and struck out four in seven innings.
Mike Sansoe, Paul McAnulty, Royce Huffman and Vincent Sinisi each had two hits for the Beavers, who out-hit Salt Lake 11-9.
The Bees (37-33) got run-scoring doubles from Brandon Wood and Mike Eylward and a two-run homer from Mathis as part of their five-run flurry to start the game.
In the second, Frank Menechino drove in a run with a one-out single and Craig Stansberry drew a bases-loaded walk for the second straight game to get the Beavers (31-38) within three runs.
McAnulty, who rejoined the Beavers Saturday, beat out an infield single with the bases loaded in the fourth to make it 5-3.
Salt Lake reliever Chris Resop retired all nine batters he faced in his three innings of work to squelch the Beavers until the ninth.
The Beavers rallied in the ninth, loading the bases and getting a run-scoring groundout from Huffman and an RBI single from Sinisi. Pete Laforest represented the tying run during his at-bat with two outs in the inning, but he struck out looking to end the game.
The Beavers wrap up their series with the Bees Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
