TODAY'S OPPONENT: The New Orleans Zephyrs are the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. This is the first year the Mets are the parent club. The Zephyrs were affiliated with Washington in 2005-2006. Last year, the Zephyrs finished third in the American South Division with a 72-71 record.
VS. NEW ORLEANS: The RedHawks took three of four from the Zephyrs April 26-29 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The Hawks outscored the Z's 26-12. The RedHawks hit three of their nine April homers in the series. Tug Hulett had a good series against the Z's, hitting .528 (7-12) with two doubles, a triple and an RBI in four games. Last season at Zephyr Field, the Z's took seven of eight, sweeping a four-game set June 30-July 3.
TODAY'S GAME: This is game 68 of the season. It's the second of a four-game series and the sixth of 16 meetings between Oklahoma and New Orleans this season.
ROSTER MOVES: RHP Scott Feldman returns to the RedHawks after being optioned yesterday by the Rangers.
LAST GAME: The RedHawks won the first game of the series last night 6-2. Mike Wood had his sixth straight quality start, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings. The RedHawks were led at the plate by home runs from David Matranga and Desi Relaford.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Chris Baker returns to the RedHawks to make his third start of the season. Baker made his last start Sunday for Double-A Frisco because the Rangers had pitchers making major league rehab starts for the RedHawks. Last season for Round Rock, Baker was 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in four games, including one start, against Z's. Jason Vargas will start for the Zephyrs. The RedHawks scored six runs on seven hits in four innings, giving Vargas a loss April 28 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
WINNING ON THE ROAD: The RedHawks are 3-2 on this road trip. They were 4-12 in the previous 16 road games before this trip. The RedHawks have received good starting pitching during the trip. The starters are 3-2 with three quality starts and a 4.06 ERA. For the season, the Hawks have a 6.13 road ERA compared to a 4.44 ERA at home.
BULLPEN STEPS UP: The bullpen hasn't allowed a run in 6.1 innings. They have allowed their opponent to score in only one inning during this road trip.
FACING A LEFTY: The RedHawks are 8-14 against lefthanded starters this season. They are hitting .289 with 12 home runs overall this season against lefties.
3, 4 Punch: The RedHawks are 8-3 with Jason Botts and Nate Gold hitting in the three and four spots in the lineup this season. Botts failed to get hit yesterday but he did draw two walks to reach base safely in his 30th consecutive game. Gold went 3-for-4 with two runs scored last night. In June, Botts is hitting .429 with two homers and nine RBIs, and Gold is hitting .444 with three homers and 21 RBIs.
HAWKS AMOUNG THE LEAGUE LEADERS: Botts is tied for first in the PCL with 23 doubles, he is third with a .423 on-base percentage and tied for fifth with 49 RBIs. Freddy Guzman is tied for fourth with 16 stolen bases.
DOT-DOT-DOT: The RedHawks improved to 13-5 in the first game of a series last night...The Hawks are 7-3 on Saturday this season...Hawk hitters have drawn the second most walks in the PCL this season with 273.
