JUNE 16, 2007, 6:00 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (33-35) at Nashville Sounds (39-29)
HOME: 24-12 (31-41 in '06) AWAY: 9-23 (22-50 in '06) vs. Nashville: 6-3 (7-9 in '06)
TONIGHT: The Royals visit Greer Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. game vs. the Nashville Sounds. It's the game 2 of a 4-game series, which Nashville leads 1-0. Omaha is 1-4 on this 16-game road trip. Air-time is 5:40 p.m. on News Talk 1420 KOTK and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: Joe Dillon smacked his 2nd home run of the game in the bottom of the 10th to give the Sounds a 6-5 victory. With 1 out, Dillon went deep to center field off Thad Markray (3-2) for his 12th homer of the season. Dillon, who was 3-for-5 on the night, also hit a solo shot in the 1st. Trailing 5-3 entering the 9th, the Royals forced extra innings when Mitch Maier led off with his 5th home run of the campaign - and 4th hit of the game - and Bill McCarthy singled in the tying run off Luther Hackman, who suffered his 2nd blown save. Greg Aquino (1-0) tossed a scoreless 10th inning and got the win.
ROYALS REPORT: Injuries continue to keep Omaha's roster in flux. Justin Huber, who hasn't played since re-injuring a hamstring on Wednesday at Iowa, has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to last Thursday. It's the same type of injury that kept Huber on the shelf May 9-30. Lefty John Bale has had his rehab assignment terminated for now. Bale, who was rehabbing after a strained left shoulder, suffered a muscle strain in his right glute while long tossing. He had pitched 6.0 scoreless innings over 4 appearances with Omaha. *** Dillon was the 2nd opposing batter to beat the Royals this season with a walk-off home run. Anderson Hernandez hit a solo homer off Roberto Giron with 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th on May 19, giving the Zephyrs a 9-8 win. Dillon's 2-homer effort last night was the 3rd time that has been done this season by a Royals opponent, the 2nd time on this road trip. Mike Kinkade hit 2 homers Monday in Iowa's 8-2 triumph. *** With last night's loss, the Royals fell to 3-6 in extra innings and 8-13 in 1-run games. *** 4's were wild for Maier Friday. His 4 hits equaled his season-high, marking the 4th time he's accomplished it, and he has hit in 4 straight. Maier is 9-for-20 (.450) during the streak, upping his average 14 points to .289. *** Billy Butler knocked in 2 runs last night, giving him a team-leading 46 RBI in 54 games. It was his team-best 14th multi-RBI contest of the season. Butler also coaxed 3 more walks; he has picked up 40 walks compared to striking out 30 times. *** Craig Brazell is on a 6-game hitting streak. He's batting at a .480 clip (12-25) over that span, with 6 doubles, a homer and 4 RBI. *** Jace Brewer posted his 2nd straight 2-hit tilt Friday, after going 0-for-13 in his previous 4 games.
STARTERS: RH Matt Wright (3-3, 3.92) vs. RH Chris Oxspring (6-3, 2.50) Wright makes his 9th start and 14th appearance of the season. The 25-year old right-hander's last action was a start last Monday at Iowa, when he took the loss in an 8-2 defeat (4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR). Wright is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 2 starts this month, after going 1-0 with a 2.22 ERA in 6 games (5 starts) in May. He started on April 28 vs. Nashville, but was not involved in the decision as Omaha won 8-6 (4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 HR). Overall in his 8 starts, he's 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA; he's 2-2 with a 4.00 ERA in 5 relief appearances. Wright was signed by KC as a minor league free agent in the off-season after spending the 1st 7 campaigns of his professional career in the Atlanta Braves organization. In 2006, Wright opened the season pitching for Double-A Mississippi, posting a 7-3 record with a 2.22 ERA in 15 games (14 starts). He was promoted to Richmond in mid-July and went 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA over 10 starts in his 1st action at the Triple-A level. Entering this season, Wright's minor league totals included a 46-47 record, despite a 3.68 ERA and 744 strikeouts in 743.2 innings. He was selected by the Braves in the 21st round of the 2000 draft out of Robinson High School in Waco, Texas.
