Barnstormers Take Advantage Of Error, Beat Bridgeport
May 13, 2011 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
A well-played seesaw ballgame came down to its only error Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Colin Roberson fumbled a fly ball to left by Fernando Seguignol leading off the bottom of the ninth, and Aaron Herr cashed in with a long single to center as the Barnstormers clipped the Bridgeport Bluefish, 4-3.
It was the third walkoff win for the âStormers in the last five games on Prince Street and moved Lancaster (8-4) to within one-half game of York in the Freedom Division.
Seguignol, leading off the bottom of the ninth, popped a 3-1 pitch from Antonio Alfonseca into shallow left field. It appeared that Roberson would have an easy play, but he lost the handle. Seguignol barely beat a throw into second base and left for pinch runner Adam Godwin. That forced the outfielders to play a step or two closer, and Herr lofted a ball beyond Adam Greenberg's grasp for the winning hit.
The developing story for most of the evening was the stellar work turned in by both starters. Lancaster's Jerome Williams took a two-hit shutout into the sixth inning before yielding a one-out double to center by Angel Berroa. Berroa scampered to third on a wild pitch and scored on Roberson's fly ball to medium deep left. It would be the only marker off Williams in his six-inning stint.
Matt Pike's night was going along even better. The Bridgeport right-hander checked Lancaster's hot bats without a hit through six innings but faltered in the seventh. A lengthy walk to Tommy Everidge got the Barnstormers underway, and Seguignol broke up the no-hitter with a sharp single up the middle. Pike struck out Herr, but Terry Tiffee drilled the first pitch to right center for a three-run homer that just cleared the corner of the 17' picnic deck wall.
The Barnstormers enacted their end-game bullpen plan, but Roberson foiled it with a two-run, two-out homer to right off T.J. Beam, one out after a walk to Berroa. Closer Tim Hamulack (1-0) was still utilized in the ninth and retired the side in order to earn the win.
Lancaster will entertain Bridgeport again on Saturday at 6:30 as Ross Peeples (0-1) will work against Jose Rodriguez (0-2). Fireworks follow the game. It will be aired on FoxSports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com and IBNsports.com.
