(Bridgeport, Conn. - May 13, 2011) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of infielder Victor Mercedes. He returns to the Bluefish for his third season in the Atlantic League and ninth of professional baseball.

"Victor will add depth to our infield," says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "He is a tremendous hitter and we look forward to his contributions once again."

Mercedes is in his ninth season of professional baseball, third in the Atlantic League, and second with the Bridgeport Bluefish. He began the year with Laguna of the Mexican League, where, in 30 contests, he recorded a .303 batting average with five home runs, 26 runs scored, and 23 RBI over the course of 122 at-bats.

Last season with the Bluefish, the switch-hitter made a quick impact in the Park City after coming over from Oaxaca of the Mexican League. In 17 games, he batted .439 with four doubles, four home runs, 15 runs scored, and 16 RBI over the course of 66 at-bats. During his Atlantic League debut in 2009, he earned a .289 average with the Newark Bears and was later signed by the Dodgers. The infielder earned 36 RBI and 21 extra-base hits (16 doubles) in 201 official plate appearances.

The infielder has reached as high as Double-A with four different teams (Nationals, Pirates, White Sox, and Dodgers). Victor was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999 and has a .279 average in his Minor-League career with 562 runs scored, 495 RBI, and 157 stolen bases in 1,022 contests.

To make room on the roster, the Bluefish have released infielder Danny Richar.
