Lancaster Stormers News Release
For the first time all season, one got away in the late innings.
Long Island scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to down the Barnstormers, 7-6, in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark on Wednesday evening. The Ducks handed Lancaster its first loss when leading after seven innings during the 2011 campaign.
Lancaster remained one-half game behind the York Revolution in the Freedom Division.
Matt Watson gave the Barnstormers a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh with a booming three-run homer to right field, and Jon Huber was able to protect that lead with the aid of a double play in the Ducks portion of the inning.
T.J. Beam wasn't so fortunate in the eighth. J.R. House led off with a single flared down the right field line off an 0-2 pitch. Matt Padgett's bouncer toward the middle got through for another single. Beam (2-3) got the first out when Erick Monzon lined a bunt to Tommy Everidge at first and went ahead of Dan Lyons in the count. Lyons, however lined a double to the alley in right center, driving home House and chasing Padgett to third. Kraig Binick tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right, and Ray Navarrete knocked the decisive run home with another double to right center.
Adam Calderone led off the ninth with a single to left, his third hit of the game, but Ehren Wassermann roared back to strike out the side afterward recording his sixth save.
Lancaster grabbed its first lead in the fifth inning. Ducks starter Mark Diapoules walked Angel Flores and Watson around hitting Everidge with a pitch to load the bases. Aaron Herr followed with a double cranked into the left field corner to score a pair of runs for a 3-1 lead. Brandon Jones lined to left against Bob Zimmerman to end the inning.
The Ducks responded with a sacrifice fly by Javier Colina in the bottom of the fifth then added two more in the sixth. Cesar Carrillo opened the inning with back-to-back walks to Lew Ford and J.R. House. Tim McNab was summoned from the pen and coaxed a well-executed 3-6-1 double play out of Padgett. A passed ball scored Ford with the tying run. Monzon singled, stole second and scored the lead run on a single to center by Lyons.
Bubbie Buzachero (4-2) retired all six batters he faced to earn the win for the Ducks.
The same two teams will battle on Thursday evening at 7:05 in the middle game of the series. Lancaster will send Ross Peeples (7-5) to the mound. For the Ducks, it will be right-hander Joselo Diaz (4-5). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com.
NOTES: Watson has hit safely in 14 straight with home runs in seven of those games...He has 18 RBI...Calderone is batting .452 in his last eight games...Herr has driven runs home in five straight games...The Barnstormers are now 19-6 in one-run games on the year...Both teams were 4-for-4 stealing bases in the game...Binick still holds the league lead by two over Gilberto Mejia after both stole one in the game.
