Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Camden, NJ - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs continued their second-half swoon with a 4-3 loss in 14 innings to the Camden Riversharks on Wednesday night from Campbell's Field. It was the longest games of the season for the Blue Crabs in terms of innings played and time of game (four hours, eight minutes). Southern Maryland dropped to 3-10 in the second half.
The evening started just fine as the Blue Crabs scored two first inning runs off of Camden starter Eddie Camacho. Back-to-back RBI doubles by leftfielder Ben Harrison and third baseman Kody Kirkland gave the Blue Crabs a 2-0 lead.
Camden crept their way back into the game in the fourth as an RBI groundout from first baseman Brian Burgamy cut the Southern Maryland lead to 2-1.
Things stayed that way until the ninth where with two on and two out, catcher Toby Hall grounded a seeing-eye single into leftfield to score shortstop Danny Richar to tie the game at two. The hit came off of closer Jim Ed Warden who blew only his second save of the season in 21 opportunities.
With the game tied, each team's bullpen matched each other zero for zero until the 14th when Southern Maryland designated hitter Brian Barton came through with a clutch RBI single to give the Blue Crabs a 3-2 lead.
But in the bottom of the 14th, reliever Jason Waddell loaded the bases with one out when second baseman Juan Francia lined a single into centerfield to score two runs and give the Riversharks a 4-3 win. The loss dropped the Blue Crabs to 2-4 in extra-inning games this season.
Right fielder Adam Godwin went 3-4 with a stolen base before leaving the game in the seventh with a jammed thumb. His status is unknown. Second baseman Bridger Hunt, Barton, Harrison and Kirkland each had two hits for the Blue Crabs who left 15 men on base.
Camden got a 3-5 effort from Richar with a double, two singles and two runs scored. Third baseman Pedro Feliz had two hits for the Riversharks as well.
Reliever Joe D'Alessandro (1-0) got the win for Camden, while Waddell (3-6) took the loss for Southern Maryland.
Southern Maryland takes on Camden in game two of a three-game series on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. The Blue Crabs will send righty Nick Green (6-4, 4.27 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Carlos Vasquez (6-3, 4.13 ERA) for the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
