York Revolution News Release
Chris Nowak's two-run homerun gave the York Revolution a lead in the seventh, but the Bridgeport Bluefish plated a pair in the bottom of the eighth to take the opener of a three-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, 3-2 on Wednesday night in Bridgeport. The Revs have two games remaining on their season-long nine-game road trip, before heading home to open a nine-game homestand on Saturday evening.
Nowak's homer to left broke up a shutout and gave the Revs a 2-1 lead in support of starter Shaun Garceau who tossed a masterpiece. The righty, making just his second start in July after being moved to the bullpen, allowed only three hits and one run in a season-high seven innings, while striking out a season-best seven and walking only two.
The Bluefish rallied with one out in the eighth, however, as Adam Greenberg slapped a single to right and Andres Perez drove a game-tying RBI double to center. Steve Moss then punched a soft ground single through the right side of the infield, plating Perez with the go-ahead run.
York failed to manage a hit against Bluefish reliever Chris Rivera (3-0) who tossed two innings for the win, and closer Juan Rincon who nailed down his 13th save.
Revs reliever Sean Stidfole (2-3) suffered the loss.
Bridgeport starter Wardell Starling carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth and retired 11 consecutive batters before Vince Harrison led off the seventh with a single to right field setting the stage for Nowak.
The Revs set the table in each of the first two innings with a leadoff single and a walk against Starling but could not score in either frame.
Bridgeport grabbed a first inning lead on a two-out bloop single to right by Wes Bankston.
Notes: The Revs remain in first place by half a game in the Freedom Division's second half race. The blown save was the first for the Revs since June 16; the Revs had converted each of their previous seven save opportunities. Garceau retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced, and has now allowed just four earned runs in his last 21.2 innings of work since June 29 (1.66 ERA). York's five-game winning streak against Bridgeport is snapped; the streak matched the longest in series history and was the first time since 2009. The Revs fall to 2-5 on the current road trip and have lost all three series openers, held to two runs in each of the three openers on the trip. Harrison (2-for-3) is on a seven-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 30 of his last 32 games. James Shanks' double in the sixth also extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games. Bridgeport has won a season-high seven consecutive games. York's Corey Thurman (7-3, 3.89) will face Bridgeport's Esteban Yan (0-0, 7.36) in the middle game of the series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, Shoutcast.com (WPDC), and YorkRevsTV.com beginning at 6:30 with Darrell Henry on the call.
