Barnstormers keep blasting away
August 15, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
During the early stages of the second half, the Lancaster Barnstormers were struggling to put big numbers together. Now, the offense is in full throttle.
Reggie Taylor and Jeremy Todd each went 4-for-5 as the Barnstormers battered the beleaguered Long Island Ducks, 13-4, Tuesday evening at Citibank Park.
The win was the seventh in the last eight games for the Barnstormers (18-10). During that stretch, the club has accumulated at least 10 hits in every game and has averaged more than nine runs.
Taylor wasted no time extending his hitting streak to 10 games, launching a towering home run down the right field line to lead off the game against Jim Mann (0-1). Danny Gonzalez followed with a double to left center, stretching his current streak to seven. One out later, Jose Ortiz singled up the middle for the second run, keeping his hitting skein alive at nine games. With two outs, Ortiz scored on a base hit to center by Jutt Hileman, who batted safely for the eighth consecutive game.
Lancaster stretched the lead to 4-0 as Lance Burkhart raced home on a foul sacrifice fly by Gonzalez. Todd then unloaded his sixth homer of the season to right field, a two-run blast for a 6-0 lead.
Todd and Chris Van Rossum tacked on RBI singles in the fourth around an RBI ground ball by Ortiz. Then, in the fifth, Taylor crushed a two-run homer to right, Todd added an RBI double, and Van Rossum notched his second RBI single of the night for the 13-1 lead. Lancaster failed to score in the final four innings off Kevin Mannix and first baseman Rob Cafiero.
Eric Ackerman (4-3) was the beneficiary of the run support as he won for the first time in three starts. The left-hander was reached by a Kevin Haverbusch homer in the second and a sacrifice fly by Brad King in the sixth. He worked six innings, his longest stint of the season, yielding eight hits while walking two and striking out six.
Chris Clem worked the final three innings in his Barnstormers debut after coming over from the Road Warriors. The 23-year old right-hander allowed four consecutive ground ball singles that produced two Long Island runs in the seventh but got out of the inning on a double play. He retired seven of the final eight batters he faced for his first save of the season.
