Bears six run first sinks Patriots

NEWARK, NJ - August 15, 2006 - Led by a six run first inning, the Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-3 Tuesday evening at Commerce Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Bears improved to 14-14 and remain in second place in the North Division behind the Bridgeport Bluefish.

Already leading 2-0, left-fielder Al Benjamin reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Jeff Nettles, leading to the third run of the inning. Catcher Chris Torres hit a two-out, two-run single, and third baseman Jack Santora completed the scoring with an RBI double. Newark sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.

The Bears took an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit an RBI double extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Two batters later Benjamin ripped a two-out RBI single extending his hitting streak to ten games. Designated hitter Alexis Hernandez added a solo home run, his tenth of the season, in the top of the eighth inning for the Bears ninth run.

Torres, Hernandez, and shortstop Liu Rodriguez each finished with two hits for the Bears, while Nettles led the Patriots offensively going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his 20th of the season, run scored, and two RBI.

Carlos Mirabal (3-3) pitched into the seventh inning for the first time this season, going six-plus allowing three runs on five hits, while Keith Ramsey (3-6) took the loss for the Patriots throwing four innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits.

The Bears and Patriots will play game two of the three-game series Wednesday evening at Commerce Bank Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
