Bears devour Patriots 9-3

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-3 before 5,018 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Tuesday evening.

The Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Matt Brunson was hit by a pitch and shortstop Liu Rodriguez doubled to put runners on second and third. Designated hitter Alexis Hernandez followed with an RBI groundout to plate Brunson. First baseman Victor Rodriguez was intentionally walked to load the bases and right fielder Will Pennyfeather hit an RBI single. Left fielder Al Benjamin reached on a fielder's choice and Pennyfeather was able to advance to second on a throwing error on the play. Catcher Chris Torres then hit a two-run single and third baseman Jack Santora followed with an RBI double to close the scoring.

Newark added two more runs to the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Liu Rodriguez singled and scored on an RBI double by Victor Rodriguez. Benjamin then hit an RBI single to make the score 8-0.

Somerset got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson drew a walk and would later score on an RBI single by third baseman Jeff Nettles to make the score 8-1.

The Patriots scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Nettles (20) and a double play with bases loaded that plated a run for Somerset to cut the lead to 8-3.

The Bears extended their lead in the top of the eighth inning. Hernandez hit a solo home run (7) to make the score 9-3.

Bears starter Carlos Mirabel (3-3) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings pitched. Patriots starter Keith Ramsey (3-6) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits in four innings pitched.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday evening with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears. Wednesday's game includes entertainment from The ZOOperstars! presented by APC and NCG.
