Iowa Barnstormers News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers used an intimidating defense to improve to 10-4 on the season with a 69-37 victory over the Milwaukee Iron Saturday night before a crowd of 9,415 fans at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field. The victory combined with Green Bay's loss at Quad City leaves the Barnstormers just one victory shy of clinching the af2's Midwest Division Championship. Milwaukee falls to 5-9 on the season with the loss.
The Barnstormers opened the scoring quickly as WR Dusty Kain recovered the opening kickoff in the endzone just 10 seconds into the game. Following a blocked Milwaukee field goal attempt, Iowa's Errick McCown took at toss from Quarterback Brian Villanueva and ran in for a score, giving the Barnstormers a 14-0 lead. Milwaukee evened the game at 14-14 to end the first quarter but that's as close as the Iron would get for the remainder of the game.
The final three quarters was all Barnstormer defense as the unit forced 4 Milwaukee turnovers, returning 3 for touchdowns. Iowa's Jason Simpson was a welcome return to the lineup, making his presence felt immediately with two interceptions and numerous tackles. For his effort, Simpson was named Ironman of the game. Iowa's Brent Curvey and Tanner Varner also had returns for scores and kicker Jeff Glas chipped in with 2 Field goals in route to the 69-47 Barnstormer victory.
Next up for the Barnstormers is a road contest against the Quad City Steamwheelers on Saturday, July 18. Iowa will be looking to capture their first ever af2 Midwest Division Championship, however the task won't be easy. The season series with Quad City currently stands at 1-1. Iowa returns home to close out the 2009 regular season on Saturday, July 25 when they battle Oklahoma City. Great seats are still available for as low as $12.00 per seat.
