Wildcats clinch playoff spot

South Georgia Wildcats News Release


The South Georgia Wildcats capitalized on 4 Florida Firecats to clinch a spot in the 2009 af2 playoffs with a 52-35 victory Saturday night in Albany, Ga.

The turnovers would begin at the onset for Florida, as they fumbled the opening kickoff which was recovered and returned for a touchdown by South Georgia's Kelvin Dickens. Florida would have two more turnovers in the first half to fall behind South Georgia 26-15 and would never get closer than 10 points in the second half.

South Georgia QB Darnell Kennedy was instrumental in snapping a 3 game losing streak for the Wildcats completing 60% of his passes for 241 yards and 5 touchdowns in the win. Firecats QB Justin Midgett, starting in place of an injured Chris Wallace, finished the night completing 52.4% of passes for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Firecats wideout Magic Benton led all receivers with 10 receptions for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. Alvance Robinson led the way for the Wildcats with 6 receptions for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 9-5 on the season as they prepare to host the Boise Burn in their final home game of the 2009 season next Saturday night at 7:30pmEST. Florida falls to 6-8 with the loss and will host the Tennessee Valley Vipers next Saturday night at 7:30pmEST.
