Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (7-8) were unable to close out their home schedule with a victory, falling to the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings (9-5), 69-67. Former University of Oklahoma QB Tommy Grady came out firing on all cylinders in his first start in arenafootball2, but it was the quick strike of the BattleWings offense that proved to be the determining factor.
On the Dawgz first offensive possession, Grady tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Dawgz all-time leading receiver Al Hunt. The BattleWings didn't take long to answer back as Andrico Hines hit Manwell Talbert on a 6 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at seven a piece with 12:11 to go in the first. After a muffed kick return recovered by Dawgz WR Danny Howard, Grady hit Hunt again to give the Dawgz a 17-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The Grady and Hunt connection continued in the second quarter as Grady threw a 41-yard TD bomb. The BattleWings answered quickly on a Jason Schule 34 yard rush, his second of the game. The rush gave Schule the single season af2 record for rushing yards, becoming the first player to surpass 500 yards in a season. After another Oklahoma City score, Bossier scored back-to-back TDs to take a 34-31 lead with just 23 seconds left in the half. Not to be out done, the Dawgz drove the ball 47 yards to take back the lead on Hunt's ninth rushing TD of the season and head to the locker room up 38-34 at the half.
The BattleWings came out of the halftime break looking for a quick strike, and did just that on a 51-yard opening kickoff return by P.J. Berry to take a 41-38 lead. The rest of the third quarter slowed down as the teams headed into the final quarter with the BattleWings ahead, 48-41. The Dawgz could never get the lead back in the 4th, trading touchdowns with the BattleWings throughout the fourth quarter. Dawgz FB Freddie Rollins found the end zone on his 15th rushing TD of the year, a new franchise record. With 2:53 left, the BattleWings returned their second kickoff for a touchdown, extending their lead to 69-60. Al Hunt would score once more, tying a franchise record with 7 TDs in a game, but it wasn't enough as Bossier-Shreveport recovered the onside kick attempt, and salted away a 69-67 win over Oklahoma City.
The Yard Dawgz have a week off before traveling to Des Moines to take on the #6 ranked Iowa Barnstormers. Last week the Barnstormers knocked off the top ranked Spokane Shock.
