Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Traverse City Beach Bums starting pitcher Bryan Banes posted a career best performance as he pitched a complete game as they beat the Southern Illinois Miners in front of 3,788 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 7-1.
Banes (8-1) did not walk a single batter and struck out five as he earned his eighth win of 2011. The All-Star left hander had not pitched longer than seven innings until Saturday, as he registered his first professional complete game. Miners starting pitcher Ryan Zink (4-5) pitched six innings allowing six runs and twelve hits in suffering his fifth loss of the season.
The Beach Bums tied a season high by scoring six times in the first inning. Left fielder J.T. Hall, who had been mired in a 2-for-30 slump at the plate during the homestand, launched his seventeenth home run of the season. Hall's homer drove in three runs, giving the Beach Bums a 3-0 lead. Second baseman Hector Bernal lined a two-out, two-run triple to the right-center field gap to give Traverse City a 5-0 lead. Beach Bums catcher John Parham lined a double into the right field corner to drive in the sixth Traverse City run to complete the scoring in the inning.
In the sixth, center fielder Zack Pace drove in a run with an RBI single to score Parham to give the Beach Bums a 7-0 lead. It wasn't until a two-out, ninth inning RBI-single by Southern Illinois third baseman Nate Hall that the Miners were able to score their only run, making the score 7-1 in favor of Traverse City.
With the win, the Beach Bums improve to 37-34, while Southern Illinois falls to 43-27 on the season. Beach Bums shortstop Tom Zebroski and Parham each had three hits to lead the Beach Bums offense.
The Beach Bums-Miners series concludes on Family Funday Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Kids, 12 years of age and younger receive half off their chairback ticket with the purchase of an adult chairback ticket at full price. Kids ages five through 12 are invited to run the bases after the game. Don't forget to bring your glove, a baseball, or other memorabilia you want signed by the Beach Bums because the entire team will be available to sign autographs after the game in front of the clubhouse.
