Joliet Slammers News Release
(O'Fallon, MO) - Kyle Maunus tallied four hits and drove in a team record seven runs as the Joliet Slammers (41-29) crushed the River City Rascals (52-18) by a final score of 16-1 Saturday night.
With the win the Slammers remained 4.5 games up on the Traverse City Beach Bums in the East Division of the Frontier League.
The first inning set the tone for the game as the Slammers scored three times. Josh Flores started things with a single, Brad Netzel walked, and Hector Pellot singled to load the bases against River City starter Wayde Kitchens. Reid Chenworth followed with a two-RBI single and Joliet was on the board. Two outs later Kyle Maunus singled home Pellot to extend the lead to 3-0.
They'd put the game completely out of reach in the second as the Slammers brought seven across the plate. Bobby Leeper and Flores smacked back to back singles to start the frame. Netzel drew his second walk in as many innings as the Slammers loaded the bases. Pellot singled two runs home and Chenworth crushed a double to drive in one more. Sean Estand was hit by a pitch and with one away Maunus singled in two more. The throw in got away and Maunus advanced to second on the play. A Ben Hewett sacrifice fly drove in Estand and a wild pitch scored Maunus to complete the monster inning.
Joliet gave starter Ryne Miller (1-5) even more run support in the fifth. With one out Flores and Netzel got things going again with singles. Then with two away a wild pitch scored Flores from third. Chenworth walked and Estand was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fox singled in Netzel for the second run of the inning. His hit was immediately followed by a Maunus RBI single to make the score 13-0 in favor of the Slammers.
Miller gave up a run in the fifth but the righty finally got a victory as he went five innings, giving up the lone run on three hits, walking three and striking out three.
The Slammers continued to pour on the offense in the seventh. Estand singled and Fox doubled to start the frame. That's when Maunus went the opposite field for his 13th home run of the year. It brought his RBI total to seven on the night; the most any Slammers player has tallied in one game this season.
Flores (3-6), Netzel (2-4), Pellot (3-5), Chenworth (2-5), Fox (3-6), Maunus (4-5), and Leeper (2-6) all recorded multi-hit games for the Slammers.
Joliet will go for the series victory Sunday night as Andrew Moss (4-3, 3.25 ERA) takes the mound. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. Central Time. Fans can tune in for all the action starting at 4:50 on AM 1340 WJOL and www.wjol.com.
