Southern Illinois Miners News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Miners couldn't overcome a big first inning deficit as they lost, 7-1, to the Traverse City Beach Bums Saturday night at Wuerfel Park. The Beach Bums struck for six runs in the first inning against Miners starter Ryan Zink.
With the loss, Zink's record fell to 4-5 on the year. Traverse City starter Bryan Banes threw his first career complete game and improved his record to 8-1.
J.T. Hall put the Beach Bums on the board in the first inning when he hit a three-run home run with one out. Three batters later, Hector Bernal hit a two-out, two-run double to make it a 5-0 game. Bernal scored on John Parham's RBI double to cap the six-run first inning.
Traverse City managed just four hits in Friday's game, but six of their 14 hits came in the first inning of Saturday's game.
Zink settled down after the first inning, not allowing another run until the sixth inning. His final line included seven runs off 12 hits in six innings of work. He struck out three in a losing effort. The all-star was working on short rest as back pain kept Joe Augustine from making his scheduled start.
Southern Illinois had a chance to cut into the lead in the second inning when Ken Gregory, Sean Harrell and Boomer Blanchard hit three consecutive two-out singles. However, Harrell was tagged out on a very close play at third base before Gregory's run crossed the plate. That kept the shutout in tact.
The Miners finally got on the board in the top of the ninth when Will Block led off the inning with a double. Nate Hall drove him home with a two-out single in the pouring rain.
Gabriel Shaw tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Miners.
The first pitch of the game was delayed 13 minutes due to a short rain shower. The rain returned again in the bottom of the eighth inning, but play did not stop for the weather.
The Miners will conclude the road trip on Sunday when David Harden (5-4, 3.19) takes the mound for Southern Illinois. Traverse City will throw David Nathanson (1-1, 3.71). The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Central Time from Wuerfel Park. Following an off-day on Monday, the Miners return home on Tuesday, Aug. 9 for a 7:05 p.m. game against Rockford.
