TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums caught bad breaks as they fell to the Joliet Slammers in game two of a three-game series in front of 3,677 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 4-3.
The loss drops the Beach Bums to three and a half games back of the first-place Slammers in the Frontier League East Division.
Traverse City jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single from center fielder Zack Pace. The Beach Bums nearly added a second run in the inning, but Joliet center fielder Bobby Leeper threw out Traverse City second baseman Hector Bernal at home plate trying to score to end the frame.
In the fourth, Joliet took a 2-1 lead when designated hitter Erik Lis launched his team-best eleventh home run of the season. Prior to the home run, Beach Bums starter David Deminsky had retired the first 11 batters he had faced before giving up a single to second baseman Hector Pellot, followed by the home run to Lis.
Joliet would add another run in the sixth inning when catcher Trey Manz knocked out his second home run of the season to make it a 3-1 Slammers lead. The Beach Bums got a two-run double from second baseman Hector Bernal with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at three. Unfortunately, the Beach Bums caught a bad break when Bernal's double hopped over the right-field wall, resulting in a ground rule double, forcing Beach Bums first baseman Jeff Flagg to have to stay at third base when it appeared as if he would have scored had the ball not jumped over the fence. Flagg was unable to score as a result.
In the seventh, Joliet third baseman Sean Estand gave the Slammers their go-ahead run with an RBI-single to make the score 4-3 in favor of Joliet. Slammers relievers Brian Smith and Ryan Quigley pitched two scoreless innings to finish the ballgame, and give the Slammers a split after the first two games of the series.
Deminsky (2-2) suffered his second loss after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing a one-out walk in the seventh inning that eventually scored after his departure from the ballgame. Joliet reliever Chuck Lukanen (4-0) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to earn his fourth win of the season. With the loss, the Beach Bums fall to 30-29, while the Slammers improve to 33-25 on the season.
