Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - The only run scored on Monday night was a sacrifice fly and it came from Southern Illinois in a 1-0 win over the Evansville Otters at Historic Bosse Field.
Both teams stayed scoreless into the top of the seventh inning when Miners' catcher Sean Coughlin reached on a one-out single and scored a few batters later on the fly ball to center field from Nate Hall.
The Otters had at least one base runner in each inning after that but were unable to score the tying run in the 1-0 defeat.
Southern Illinois wins the series and is now 36-23 this season. The loss moves Evansville down to 21-39.
Evansville's starter Kyle Barry and Southern Illinois' pitcher Brendon Malkowski battled in a pitcher's duel throughout the night. Barry pitched a season-high eight innings while also recording a high of nine strikeouts. He drops to 2-4 this year after giving up the only run in the loss. The win goes to Malkowski who threw six scoreless innings and struck out six batters. Reliever Clayton Dill recorded his second save without giving up a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Evansville is off on Tuesday night but will return to action on Wednesday evening with the start of a six-game homestand. The Gateway Grizzlies come to town for a three-game series with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT on Wednesday night for Casino Aztar night at the Ballpark.
