Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, IN - Ryan Babineau's two-run single with the bases loaded grabbed the lead for the RailCats (42-30) in the bottom of the eighth as they went on to defeat the St. Paul Saints (37-34) 5-2 at U. S. Steel Yard on Friday night.
With the game tied at two, Saints reliever Mikey Mehlich walked Cristian Guerrero and Craig Maddox to begin the eighth inning. After a pair of fly-outs, Drew Martinez drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases and St. Paul lifted Mehlich for their closer Matt Meyer to face Zac Mitchell.
Ryan Babineau pinch-hit for Mitchell and laced an 0-1 delivery from Meyer into left-center to score a pair and take a 4-2 lead for the RailCats. Nick Liles followed Babineau with an RBI single of his own to give the 'Cats the final margin.
Ian Durham, who entered in the eighth, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his second victory of the season.
Adam Klein singled to begin the game and scored on Mike Massaro's league-leading triple to make it 1-0. With two outs, Christian Vitters doubled down the left field line off of St. Paul starter Anthony Claggett to score Massaro to make it 2-0.
In the top of the fifth with two out, Adam Frost hammered a solo homerun to left field to cut the RailCats lead in half to 2-1. RailCats starter Osvaldo Rodriguez then walked Joey Becker and allowed a single to Joey Becker to put runners on the corners and was lifted from the game.
Morgan Coombs entered for the 'Cats and got Willie Cabrera to fly out to end the inning.
Rodriguez allowed just the one run on four hits and four walks in four and two third innings. Osvaldo did not strike out a batter in his second start with the RailCats.
St. Paul scratched across the tying run in the sixth. Brandon Tripp led off the inning with a double off the first base bag and scored on Jose Hernandez's single to center to make it 2-2.
Anthony Claggett was removed from the game after six innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits, one walk and struck out five in his second consecutive start against the RailCats. He received a no-decision, his fifth of the season.
The Saints threatened in the top of the eighth when Brad Boyer lead off with a single off of reliever Estavan Uriegas. Uriegas struck out Willie Cabrera then allowed a base hit to right to Brandon Tripp that moved Boyer to third.
With runners at the corners, Ian Durham was summoned from the RailCats bullpen. He struck out Ole Sheldon for the second out of the inning and then got Jose Hernandez on a shattered bat liner to third to get out of the jam.
The terrific work by the bullpen set up the RailCats eighth inning rally with four and a third innings of one-run baseball. Coombs, Uriegas and Durham combined for just four hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts.
The game began after a one hour, seventeen minute rain delay from the scheduled 7:40 start time.
The RailCats and Saints continue their three-game series on Saturday at 6:10 p.m. RHP Stephen Hiscock (0-2, 4.10 ERA) goes for the RailCats; RHP Mark Hamburger (5-4, 3.75 ERA) will throw for St. Paul.
Due to the inclement weather at Friday night's game, the RailCats are extending the 7 Peaks Pass of All Passes through Sunday's game with St. Paul! For more information call (219) 882-2255.
