St. Paul Saints News Release
GARY, IN - The long night got even longer and as the clock struck midnight the St. Paul Saints watched a tie ball game turn into a deficit and lost another game at U.S. Steel Yard, their fifth this season, 5-2 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats.
The game began after an hour and 17 minute rain delay, but the game wouldn't be decided for another three hours. The Saints had the first opportunity to break the 2-2 tie in the eighth. Brad Boyer reached on a leadoff infield single and with one out moved to third on a single by Brandon Tripp. Ian Durham came out of the Railcats bullpen and promptly struck out Ole Sheldon and got Jose Hernandez to pop out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth Saints reliever Mikey Mehlich, who pitched a scoreless seventh, lost control of the strike zone. He walked the first two hitters of the inning. With one out Brian Kolb flew out to center that moved pinch runner Ryan Brockett to third. Mehlich then walked Drew Martinez to load the bases. Matt Meyer came out of the bullpen. The last time the Saints were at U.S. Steel Yard Meyer blew two saves. While it wasn't a save situation on Friday night he still couldn't get the job done giving up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Ryan Babineau followed by an RBI single to Nick Liles that proved to be the difference.
The Railcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first against Saints starter Anthony Claggett. Adam Klein reached on an infield single and Mike Massaro tripled him home to make it 1-0 Railcats. With two outs Christian Vitters doubled home Massaro to make it 2-0.
The Saints got on the board in the fifth when Adam Frost hit a solo homer to left, his sixth of the season, to make it 2-1.
The Saints tied the game in the sixth when Tripp doubled and scored on Hernandez' single.
The same two teams meet Saturday evening at 6:10 p.m. in game two of the three game series at U.S. Steel Yard. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (5-4, 3.76) to the mound against Railcats RHP Stephen Hiscock (0-2, 4.10). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
