Binghamton Senators News Release

LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators dropped to 0-4-1-0 after losing three games in three nights last weekend.

FRIDAY, OCT. 21ST vs. HERSHEY (3-4 L): Hershey jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals by former B-Sen BROOKS LAICH and a power-play tally by center JOEY TENUTE. But the Sens scored the next three goals and tied the game on a short-handed shot from beyond the red line by forward JOE CULLEN. Also scoring for the B-Sens were winger GREG WATSON and defenseman FILIP NOVAK. But only 17 seconds after CULLEN'S goal, the Bears reclaimed the lead on a power-play score by winger TOMAS FLEISCHMANN. BILLY THOMPSON started in goal for Binghamton and stopped 25 of 29 shots in the loss. FREDERIC CASSIVI earned the win by stopping 28 of 31 Binghamton attempts. Binghamton converted on two of 11 power-play attempts while Hershey scored on four of nine tries. It was only the fourth time in franchise history that the Sens have allowed four power-play goals in a game.

SATURDAY, OCT. 22ND @ WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (1-5 L): The Penguins remained undefeated with a 5-1 win against Binghamton on Saturday night. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored the game's first five goals, including four in the opening period, en route to the victory that snapped a seven-game regular season losing streak to the Sens. Defenseman RYAN WHITNEY and forward MICHEL OUELLET had two goals each before Binghamton forward GREG WATSON extended his point streak to three games with a short-handed goal with only one second remaining in the second period. Goaltender KELLY GUARD made his first regular season AHL start and stopped 27 of 32 shots in the loss. MARC-ANDRE FLEURY stopped 20 of 21 shots for the win. Binghamton did not score in six power-plays while the Penguins converted on two of their six attempts.

SUNDAY, OCT. 23RD @ HERSHEY (2-5 L): Binghamton's losing streak reached five games with a 5-2 loss at the Giant Center on Sunday evening. Just as in Friday night's game, the Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Winger GREG WATSON got the Sens on the board at 12:33 of the second period with his third goal in three nights. Winger JEFF HEEREMA had the other B-Sens goal while BROOKS LAICH once again had two goals. The Bears matched their power-play success of Friday night converting on four of nine chances while Binghamton was successful on two of their four attempts. BILLY THOMPSON tied a career high with 41 saves in the losing effort. FREDERIC CASSIVI improved his record to 3-2-1 by stopping 17 of 19 Binghamton shots.

THIS WEEK: After opening the season with five straight games against East Division opponents, the Sens will head east for a pair of games against Atlantic Division foes. Binghamton takes on Portland Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. and will then play Lowell on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. Binghamton has an all-time record of 1-1-0 (W-L-T) against both opponents and has faced neither team since the 2002-03 season. After this weekend, the B-Sens will have played Lowell and Portland in back-to-back games three times dating back to the inaugural 2002-03 season.

SATURDAY, OCT. 29TH @ PORTLAND (7:05 p.m.): The Senators and Pirates will play for the first time since Feb. 9, 2003 when Portland was a 3-2 winner. Their only other match up was on Dec. 21, 2002 when BRAD SMYTH scored the game-winning goal for Binghamton and RAY EMERY was the winning goalie. Portland leads the Atlantic Division with eight points in six games.

SUNDAY, OCT. 30TH @ LOWELL (4:05 p.m.): Binghamton and Lowell will play for the first time since Feb. 8, 2003 when the Sens won 3-2 in overtime thanks to a goal by ALEXANDRE GIROUX. Lowell has a 2-3-0 record through five games and is tied for sixth in the Atlantic Division with the Providence Bruins.

SENS SNIPPETS: The last time a Binghamton hockey franchise started the season with five consecutive losses was October of 1985. After five games, the Binghamton Whalers stood at 0-5-0, but they rebounded to finish the 1985-86 season with a 41-34-5 record and a second place finish in the Southern Division of the AHL. Binghamton lost their first round playoff series against St. Catharines in six games in the spring of 1986...Winger GREG WATSON scored his first career power-play and short-handed goals during the weekend. His first power-play goal came on Friday in Binghamton's 3-4 loss to Hershey and his first short-handed goal came in Saturday's 1-5 loss in Wilkes-Barre. WATSON'S four-game scoring streak (3 goals, 1 assist) is a career high...Binghamton's power-play ranks eighth in the league with a 21.6 percent success rate (8/37). But the penalty kill ranks second-to-last in the 27-team league with a 69.8 percent success rate in killing penalties (30/43).
