LAST GAME: The B-Mets were trailing the Fightin Phils 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning before rain halted play. After waiting 30 minutes, the game was officially called handing Reading the victory. Reading scored four runs in the first three innings against Logan Verrett. With two outs in the fifth inning, Binghamton started an offensive rally, and went on the tie the game with an Allan Dykstra three-run home run. The tie did not last long however; Sebastian Valle hooked a solo home run around the foul pole in left field to give Reading a one-run lead. Valle hit two solo home runs in the game, and had three RBI to lead Reading.
BINGHAMTON PITCHER: RHP Noah Syndergaard makes his sixth start of the season for the B-Mets. In his last start, he labored through five innings and allowed three runs and seven hits. Three runs match the most he has allowed in a B-Met uniform this season. In 25.0 innings, opponents are hitting .263 against him. In two of his five starts, the leadoff hitter has hit a home run in the first inning. When leading off an inning, opponents are hitting .478 (11-for-23). Syndergaard began the season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A). He was named a Florida State League All-Star, and was the starting pitcher for the US Team in the 2013 Futures All-Star Game. He was drafted by the Blue Jays as the 38th pick of the 2010 draft out of Legacy HS (TX).
READING PITCHER: LHP Jesse Biddle makes his 20th start of the season for the Fightin Phils. In his last start, he beat the Portland Sea Dogs on July 18 with seven innings on the mound. He gave up two runs on three hits while striking out seven. Entering the 2013 season, Biddle was named as the top prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies organization according to Baseball America. Biddle's first half performance earned him a spot on the Eastern Division All-Star Team. Biddle was the 27th overall pick in the 2010 draft. The Phillies picked him up out of Germantown Friends HS (PA).
JULY NUMBERS: Through 20 games in July, Binghamton is 11-9. Offensively they are hitting .281 as a team, and have posted a 4.09 ERA on the mound. Darrell Ceciliani has led the offense with a .424 batting average. Danny Muno is hitting .328 this month, and Cesar Puello is right behind with a .324 clip. On the mound, Chase Huchingson has allowed two earned runs in 11.0 innings, and Jeff Walters is a perfect five-for-five in save chances.
STEALING BASES: As a team, Binghamton ranks third in the league with 100 stolen bases. The B-Mets have two players in the top five in that category. Cesar Puello is tied for third in the league with 23 stolen bases, Darrell Ceciliani is right behind with 22 steals in 26 chances. Cecliani stole second base twice last night.
CLOSING IN ON THE SAVE RECORD: Jeff Walters tossed a scoreless ninth inning on Sunday to earn his league-leading 26th save of the season. He is now just two saves behind the franchise record for saves in one season. In 2000, Jerrod Riggan recorded 28 saves for the B-Mets. The others in front of him are Eddie Kunz in 2008 and Mike Welch in 1996 (both 27).
AGAINST LEFTIES: This season Binghamton has had more success against southpaws than righthanded pitchers. They are hitting .279 against lefties as a team, and Cesar Puello is hitting .449 (31-for-68).
CECILIANI STREAKING: OF Darrell Ceciliani went 3-for-3 on Monday, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. During the streak, he is hitting .458 (27-for-59). In eleven of the fifteen games, Ceciliani has recorded multiple hit games, including a three-hit effort on July 22 vs. Reading. Ceciliani also hit in 14 consecutive games from May 24 - June 7.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets and Fightin Phils finish up a three-game series at NYSEG Stadium on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM as Mark Cohoon takes the mound for the B-Mets against David Buchanon for Reading.
