B-Mets Sweep Twin Bill with Bowie to Reach .500 Mark

Pitching prowess ruled the day Thursday as Mike Antonini tossed a complete game to propel Binghamton to a 3-1 win in the lid-lifter of the doubleheader and Josh Stinson earned his first win as a starter with five, scoreless innings in the B-Mets 2-0 triumph in the second game at NYSEG Stadium. The pitching staff limited Bowie to just a run on seven hits over 14 innings to lead to the sweep, which pushed Binghamton back to .500 for the first time since May 19.

Antonini set the tone early, retiring the first five men he faced before giving up his only run of the day. Brandon Waring smacked a two-strike curveball over the wall in left-center with two outs to put Bowie on the board, 1-0. It was Waring's eighth home run of the season.

Binghamton (30-30) evened the score in the second inning with a solo blast from Luis Hernandez, his third of the season. Starter Ryohei Tanaka served up a 3-1 fastball that the talented shortstop dropped over the wall in right.

In the third, the B-Mets dealt the decisive blow. Carlos Guzman singled to start the frame. Mike Nickeas followed with a double to join Guzman, but the lead runner was picked off third after being given the stop sign by manager Tim Teufel. Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed and drove a ball out of the yard to the left of dead-center for a two-run jack, breaking the deadlock and pushing Binghamton into a 3-1 lead.

Six days removed from holding the B-Mets to just a run over seven innings, Tanaka was harassed for three runs on seven hits over five innings in a losing effort.

Antonini, by contrast, faced four over the minimum in tossing the complete game, tying a season-high with seven strikeouts in the process. It was the southpaw's first win since May 2 when he beat Akron and just the second complete game of his career.

The second game proved to be equally impressive for the B-Mets hurlers. In his third start since moving into the rotation two weeks ago, Stinson offered up his best to date with five innings of two-hit work. The Louisiana native struck out a season-high, five hitters en route to his third win of the year.

Binghamton manufactured its first run in the second inning off Bowie (30-30) starter Zach Clark. Lucas Duda led off the stanza with his team-leading 17th double. D.J. Wabick followed with a groundout to the right side, moving Duda up to third. He scored on Eric Campbell's sacrifice fly to center, putting Binghamton ahead 1-0.

The B-Mets struck again in the third. Omir Santos started the frame with a double down the line in the left. Jon Malo joined him on base with a single through the hole on the right side. Nieuwenhuis plated Santos with a sacrifice fly to right, upping the lead to 2-0.

Clark was charged with both runs over three innings of work to take the loss, his first.

Clint Everts spelled Stinson in the sixth and held serve with a scoreless inning before exiting in the seventh after walking the leadoff hitter, Steve Lerud, on four pitches. Roy Merritt was summoned to shut the door and he succeeded by striking out Zach Booker for the first out before getting Carlos Rojas to line into an unassisted double play to first baseman Nick Evans, ending the game. The save was Merritt's sixth in seven chances.

The sweep of the doubleheader gave Binghamton its second consecutive series victory. The B-Mets open up a six-game road trip with the first contest of a three-game series at Trenton Friday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Eric Niesen (1-2, 2.67) will get the call for the opener and Trenton is slated to counter with RHP Lance Pendleton (3-3, 3.61). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
