TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Britain Rock Cats will meet in the finale of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels were outhit by the Rock Cats 9-3 but managed to get past New Britain 2-1 in game two of the series on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTER: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in the finale of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win on 6/4 at Trenton...Allowed just one run on three hits over 7 2/3 innings...Struck out two and walked three...Lone run allowed came in the third inning when he walked two batters and gave up a RBI double to Daniel Brewer...Retired the leadoff batter in seven of his eight innings on the mound...Recorded 16 ground outs and four fly outs...Threw 95 pitches, 59 strikes...Threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 29 batters he faced...Threw three pitches or fewer to 19 of the 29 batters he faced...Outing was his longest of the season...Came within an out of matching the longest start of his career...Just the second time in 10 starts he tossed six innings or more...Win was his first since 5/1 against Bowie...Has allowed three runs on nine hits over 13 innings in his last two starts since coming off of the DL 5/30...Had allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits in 5 2/3 in his previous two outings before landing on the DL...Left-handed batters are hitting just .219 against him (7-for-32).
Left-hander Tyler Robertson gets the nod in the series finale for the Rock Cats...Received a no-decision in his last start 6/4 against Binghamton, giving up two runs on three hits over six innings...Struck out five and walked two...Was just his second quality start in 10 outings this season...Had lost five of his previous six starts...Had allowed 24 runs, 19 earned, on 44 hits in 30 2/3 innings over his previous six starts (5.58)...Has allowed 60 hits in 48 1/3 innings (.313) while striking out 33 and walking 21...Is 0-1 in two starts against Richmond...Has allowed two runs on 11 hits in 10 1/3 innings while striking out six batters and walking three...Spent all of 2009 with Advanced-A Fort Meyers and went 8-8 with a 3.33 ERA in 26 starts...Struck out 103 batters in 143 1/3 innings pitched...Selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
READY TO CLEAN HOUSE: The Flying Squirrels are seeking their fourth sweep of the season in tonight's series finale against the Rock Cats...Two of the previous three series sweeps for the club have come against New Britain...The club's most recent sweep came against Bowie 4/30-5/2...Richmond has been swept twice this season (at Altoona 4/12-4/14; vs. Harrisburg 6/1-6/3).
SERIES SLUMP BUSTER: The Flying Squirrels earned their first series win since taking two of three games from the Bowie Baysox 5/10-5/12...Richmond had been 0-5-2 over its previous seven series...Overall on the season, the club is 7-8-3 in series.
A ONE-HORNED PEGASUS: Even though Richmond was outhit by New Britain last night 9-3, the Flying Squirrels still snuck past the Rock Cats 2-1...It was just the second time in 25 games where Richmond was outhit by its opponent and still won...The only other time the club was outhit and still won was 5/2 against Bowie when the Baysox outhit the Flying Squirrels 10-5 but lost 4-1.
ONE RUN FUNN: The Flying Squirrels improved to 9-9 in one-run games with last night's 2-1 win over the Rock Cats...The club is now 22-19 in games decided by three runs or less.
TIME FLIES: Last night's game lasted just 2:14 making it the second-shortest nine-inning game of the year for the Flying Squirrels...Tuesday night's series opener ended one minute sooner making it the shortest nine-inning game of the year...Entering the series, the previous quickest nine-inning game lasted 2:16 on 5/22 at Reading...The shortest game of the year overall for Richmond was 1:35 in game two of a double-header on 4/27 at New Britain.
ROCKING THE CATS: Richmond is 8-0 against New Britain this season...The Rock Cats are the only club in the Eastern League that the Flying Squirrels have a winning record against...The Flying Squirrels swept a pair of three-game series from the Rock Cats including one at The Diamond (4/19-4/21) and one at New Britain Stadium (4/26-4/28)...Half of the club's wins in April came against New Britain...Dating back to last season, the San Francisco Giants Double-A affiliate is 24-4 versus the Rock Cats.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal has hits in five straight games including a season-high four hits in a 4-for-4 effort Tuesday night against New Britain...It is the fourth hit streak of five games or more for Neal, tops on the club...Since dropping down in the order 6/4 at Trenton, he is 9-for-18 (.500) over his last five contests with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored...The 22-year-old leads the club with 17 multi-hit games, 14 doubles and is tied with Conor Gillaspie for the team lead with 18 extra base hits.
DRIED CLAY: Outfielder Clay Timpner was gone five straight games without a hit for the first time this season...He previously had not gone more than two games without a hit...The 26-year-old is 0-for-18 over his last five games with a RBI, a run scored, two walks, and three strike outs...Timpner's average dipped from .354 to .310...He still is tied for fifth in the Eastern League in batting average...Since returning from the DL 5/15, Timpner is 17-for-84 (.202) in 24 games with just four RBI...Prior to the groin strain, he was batting .459 (28-for-61) over his first 24 games with 12 RBI.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 75 double plays in 59 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Richmond improved to 9-0 when one of its starters goes seven innings or more...Right-handers Daryl Maday and David Mixon have combined for seven of those nine wins.
