Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The New Britain Rock Cats got the last word in a back-and-forth affair, claiming the finale of a three-game set, 6-5, over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in front of 6,096 on Thursday night at The Diamond.
Darren Ford got the Squirrels started as quickly as possible, belting the first pitch of the ballgame from New Britain starter Tyler Robertson over the wall in left field. The solo-home run gave Richmond a quick 1-0 advantage.
The Rock Cats pulled even in the third, when Squirrels' starter Clayton Tanner walked Yancarlos Ortiz to open the inning. Two batters later, he came in to tie the game on a groundout from Mark Dolenc.
New Britain forged ahead for the first time in the sixth inning. Tanner had allowed a walk and a single prior to Steve Singleton, who belted a three-run home run to right field to put the Rock Cats in front, 4-1.
The Squirrels came roaring back in the bottom of the inning, plating four runs to quickly reclaim their one-run lead. Jackson Williams contributed an RBI double against Robertson prior to his departure. Santos Arias entered in relief and Ryan Lormand cracked a two-run single to tie the game, 4-4. The first three runs of the inning were charged to Robertson, who departed to a no-decision. Ford tripled into the right-field corner to score Lormand as Richmond raced in front, 5-4.
The lead lasted into the eighth inning, when New Britain staged the game-winning rally against the Squirrels' bullpen. Tony Pena Jr., who started the inning, walked the lead-off batter Juan Portes. After a sacrifice bunt from Jair Fernandez, Singleton added a fourth RBI when he singled on the infield to tie the game, 5-5. An out later, Brandon Roberts laid down a perfect squeeze-bunt for a single, scoring Singleton with the eventual game-winning run. Left-hander Andy Sisco (0-3) had come on in relief prior to the Singleton infield-single and was tagged with the loss for Richmond.
Loek Van Mil (1-0) earned the victory for New Britain, working a scoreless seventh inning prior to the rally in the eighth. Right-hander Matt Williams worked the final two innings to secure the win for New Britain and earn his third save of the season.
The Squirrels will travel to Reading, PA, to open a four-game series against the Reading Phillies at 7:05 PM on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. RHP Mike MacDonald (1-4, 3.91) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Drew Naylor (4-6, 3.73) for the R-Phils.
