LAST GAME: Zack Wheeler faced just three over the minimum in his first career complete game shutout, defeating the Erie SeaWolves 1-0 last night at NYSEG Stadium. Wheeler scattered six hits and struck out seven while Reese Havens launched his seventh home run of the season to lead the B-Mets to their third straight victory. After walking Jamie Johnson to start the game, Wheeler settled down and did not issue another free pass. The righty threw 75 of his 106 pitches for strikes. The B-Mets did not break through against Erie starter James Avery until the sixth when Havens sent a solo homer over the left field fence, his seventh of the season and fourth against the SeaWolves. Erie collected two hits in the ninth inning, but Wheeler fanned Nick Castellanos to wrap up the victory.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (5-6, 4.27) makes his 11th start as a B-Met and first against the SeaWolves. The righty earned the win in his last start, defeating the Altoona Curve on July 8. Germen went a season-best 7.1 innings while allowing five runs on five hits. He walked five and struck out one in a game the B-Mets would win 10-9. Germen was promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) on May 4 after going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts) with St. Lucie.
LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (5-7, 4.30) makes his 17th start of the season and fourth against the B-Mets. De La Cruz took a no-decision in his last start against the Harrisburg Senators on July 7th, allowing two runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out four and walked two in a game the SeaWolves would lose 5-3 in ten innings. In three starts versus Binghamton the Dominican Republic native has gone 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA. The B-Mets have hit .234 against him as a team. De La Cruz spent the first seven years of his pro career in the Cleveland Indians system. He was claimed off waivers by the Tigers in late March 2012. He spending parts of three seasons with the Akron Aeros.
ANYTHING YOU CAN DO: After Cory Mazzoni tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout in the first game of the doubleheader on Friday night, Zack Wheelerone-upped his fellow starter with a nine-inning complete game shutout.
WHEELING AND DEALING: Zack Wheeler scattered six hits and struck out seven in the complete game shutout last night, the first of his three-year career. It was the first nine-inning complete game shutout for a B-Met since Willie Collazo baffled the New Britain Rock Cats at NYSEG Stadium on June 13, 2006. Collazo allowed five hits and struck out five in the game,
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER AT HOME: After losing 10 of 12 games at NYSEG Stadium, the B-Mets have won their last three games in the Southern Tier. It is their longest home winning streak since they took four in a row versus the Portland Sea Dogs from April 19-22.
SAVING IT FOR THE SEAWOLVES: B-Mets second baseman Reese Havens provided the only offense last night with a solo home run in the sixth inning. In eight games against Erie in 2012, Havens has hit .387 (12-for-31), ripped four home runs and collected six RBI.
SERIES VICTORY: Last night's victory insured the series win for Binghamton against the Erie SeaWolves. The B-Mets have won seven of their last ten games and taken each of the last three series.
SQUEAKING BY: Binghamton earned their sixth shutout win of the season, second in as many days and third against Erie. It was Binghamton's second 1-0 win of the year. They defeated the Trenton Thunder by the same score in walk-off fashion on May 16.
STILL ON TOP: B-Mets infielder/outfielder Eric Campbell went 1-for-4 last night with a double. He continues to lead active Eastern Leaguers with a .324 batting average.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets welcome in the Trenton Thunder for a three-game series starting tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. LHP Darin Gorski toes the rubber for Binghamton against RHP Mikey O'Brien.
